P.U.P. Belmopan convention to be held this weekend; four to contest

Still on politics… The People’s United Party will be holding its convention for the Belmopan constituency this Sunday. If the past few weeks are any indication, Sunday’s election promises to be hard fought, spirited, and maybe even nasty. Four candidates have thrown their hats in the ring – political newcomers Jason Patrick Andrews and Oscar Mira, the well-known Ruth Logan and the veteran politician Amin Hegar. They’re four very different persons who bring different things to the table. All four are convinced that they will be victorious on Sunday. That’s not possible, and in the end there can only be one winner. So how will that work out after Sunday? Can there be unity in Belmopan, a constituency where unity has been in short supply? Mike Rudon tried to get some answers in Belmopan today.

Today, all four candidates for Sunday’s convention brought their supporters, shirts, hats, banners and placards to the protest party. Today the opponent is the U.D.P., but in just a few days they will be going up against each other to see who will represent the P.U.P. as standard bearer in Belmopan. There are two new faces in the political arena – Jason Patrick Andrews and Oscar Mira. Both feel that they have what it takes to lead the charge in Belmopan.

Jason Patrick Andrews

Jason Patrick Andrews, Contesting P.U.P. Belmopan Convention

“I will concede that I am a rookie but let me tell you I have one of the most experience machinery, I have gathered some of the most competent people behind me so on November third you will see passion at work, you will see love and loyalty at work. We are very confident. We have put in our ground work. Of course the people will have to decide on that day and people keep saying elections are won on Election Day but we have put our machinery together and we believe it is well oiled and ready to work so we are feeling very optimistic.”

Oscar Mira, Contesting P.U.P. Belmopan Convention

“We’re feeling very good. This is the first time that a true Belmopanese will be elected for area representative. The people of Belmopan are ready; the people of Belmopan want one of their own to represent the interest of Belmopan. I bring integrity, I bring honesty, I bring the twenty-two years that I gave to my country. I know that I can offer more, I have offered my twenty-two years of dedicated service to this country because I believe in Belize and I believe in Belmopan.”

Oscar Mira

The other candidates are Ruth Logan and Amin Hegar. Logan is no stranger to the P.U.P. and says she brings a woman’s touch to the table. For the veteran Hegar, who lost by a slim margin to U.D.P. incumbent John Saldivar in general elections 2012, it’s a done deal as far as the convention is concerned.

Amin Hegar, Contesting P.U.P. Belmopan Convention

“All the polls are saying, if channel five has made a pole if the U.D.P. has made a poll it all shows that Amin Hegar and his team is going to win this Sunday.”

Ruth Logan, Contesting P.U.P. Belmopan Convention

Ruth Logan

“Victorious you could see it. Number one Belmopan has never had a female candidate and we all know that women are hard working people and that I bring to the table. I have had many struggles and people know me as a grass root person and I have made it and that show that we all can make it. We women we have a sense that God has given us is that we can bring things to the table and work on it.  And as a woman you guys know we don’t do promises we do growth, the growth of our children and that how we will get Belmopan moving up. Everyone deserves a chance now, everyone.”

It’s been a tough campaign for all these candidates, and at times even nasty. Still, they all recognize that the enemy is without, and not within, and all say that they will work together against the U.D.P. regardless of who wins.

Jason Patrick Andrews

“The objective here is the removal of John Saldivar and the removal of this corrupt government and so am sure we will be able to champion that cause.”

Amin Hegar

Amin Hegar

“The people don’t care who wins in this coming convention of course I will win we all know that. We will have unity al the U.D.P. returning to P.U.P. if I count ten percent of U.D.P. in a house that is a lot.”

Ruth Logan

“Of course we all are P.U.P. we are all one family.”

Oscar Mira

“I’m not coming into this race to lose, should there be or for any reason I don’t win. I will work hard; I will work for the person that wins because we will unite Belmopan. We will bring back the P.U.P. in Belmopan, Belmopan is a P.U.P. territory and we will bring it back.”

And while appearances can be deceiving, the appearance is that these four candidates are focused on the goal, and united in that cause. Mike Rudon for News Five.
