Jones begins comeback with New York triumph

Story PictureAnd in case you missed E.S.P.N. this weekend, we are happy to note that our favourite Belizean sprinter, Marion Jones, is back in form. Jones, running in just her third race in the last eleven months–and first in the U.S.A.–placed first in a strong field in Saturday’s Reebok Grand Prix held in New York City. The last minute entrant clocked the hundred metres in eleven point zero six seconds, edging out 2004 Olympic gold medallist Veronica Campbell of Jamaica as well as top Americans Torri Edwards and Lauryn Williams. After winning three gold and two bronze medals in the 2000 Olympics, Jones faltered badly in 2004 and was thought to be a has-been following the birth of a child and accusations–never proved– that she used steroids to enhance her performance. The next test for the thirty year old Jones–daughter of a Belizean mother and American father–will come in three weeks time at the U.S. outdoor championships in Indianapolis.
