Mayor Darrell Bradley says that still no response from Chang on his return

Darrell Bradley

So where is Eric Chang tonight? Well nobody knows for sure, though the best guess is that he is still in Taiwan. He was scheduled to return to Belize on October third, but didn’t. Today News Five spoke to Mayor Darrell Bradley said that Chang hasn’t said anything to the Council about the passport scandal or when he will return. But of course, the subtext is that Chang’s looming problems cannot be allowed to affect the work of the Council. But Mayor Bradley also told News Five that in early September, Chang traveled with him to Taiwan for the Asia Pacific City Summit. Bradley returned, but Chang asked for some time off to visit with his parents. Mayor Bradley gave an update saying that while he has not been able to communicate with his deputy, Chang is in correspondence with several councilors.

“Of course the Deputy Mayor is Taiwanese he is with his family, he had asked for additional time to be with his family. So in respective of what is going on in this country and this issue of the passport and his explanation; which we do require that he comes back and I have indicated that to him that we will have a meeting upon his return just to get his explanation and to see how the council will deal with this as an administrative body. But of course the Councilor I can’t summon him. What we have done is ask that he return to the jurisdiction as early as possible notwithstanding the issue that he is with his family. His parents are from Taiwan he is with is mom his dad, his wife is there his daughter is there. He has some personal business that he is dealing with there and we are dealing with this matter form a judicial stand point. Again there are certain investigations going on. Those investigations have not concluded. I have heard a lot of situations in terms of what the allegations are. We have been in contact with members of central government. We have been in contact with person who advises us legally. We want to ensure that we hear from Councilor Chang and we ask that he return to the country as soon as possible because we are approaching it from two issues. One is that we have the issue of the passport scandal which we must address and it is n the interest of the country on a whole that there will be a full and thorough investigation and there will be adequate explanations form all persons who are concerned. We are also approaching from the second point that the city has certain matter that needs to continue. The city needs a deputy mayor. The city needs a councilor with responsibility for works. While we will grant certain leave because that’s the purview of all councilors, to say that if you have personal business you can remain out of the country for a certain time. Because of the infrastructural projects, because of the requirements of the deputy mayor and because of the circumstances as it relates to the allegations and the naming of councilor Chang, he has to come back into the country as soon as possible. We are in communication with him and I have invited him by e-mail in relation to what our concerns are that we must meet upon his return and as soon as I have that meeting with him the council will convene and we are going to meet and then we will take a decision on what we will do going forward and must be very clear that everything that I have heard are allegations. We are going to operate in a very judicious way, we are going to be very fair and I had made it clear that we are very firm when it comes to accountability and transparency and holding people to account in terms of their public office and fairness that we hear from all persons including Councilor Chang and he is not in the country.”

What do you expect when you put people who isn’t a born Belizean in such office… those types of people have no love for their own country, how do you expect them to love an adopted country? They will be doing all sorts of criminal stuffs without concern as long as they are making money$$$$ we all know money talks & (you know the rest).

The mayor don’t need to summon Eric or to have ANY meeting with him. First we need to understand what the Mayor is saying. He said Eric have not talk to him nor answer his emails, but is in communication with other member of staff. I think it’s the mayor who approve Eric’s extended vacation. As deputy mayor, and for your name to come up in such a scandal OF THIS MAGNITUDE, means that, by your own action, you have vacated your position as deputy mayor. Case closed, unless we want him to scam the city council too of all its $$$s. Is there anyone who disagrees with me? Install a deputy immediately!
