Minister Hulse says no need for a senatorial probe into passport scandal

At Wednesday’s Special Sitting of the Senate, opposition representative Lisa Shoman also proposed that the Barrow administration call upon the powers of the senate to launch a separate investigation into the current passport scandal. An internal investigation in the wake of the fiasco is currently being conducted by the Ministry of Immigration, but that in-house inquiry has been widely criticized as the ministry policing itself. Unlike a previous investigation chaired by Senator Godwin Hulse in 2004, following allegations of financial improprieties at the Social Security Board, the sitting minister says there is no need for a senatorial probe into the scandal.

“I see from the Social Security that we took an inordinate amount of time to get it done and many years [went by] and nothing happened. I don’t want that for this. This needs to be fixed and fixed quick. And so this is why I say there are many calls to many agencies, including the Senate, it depends upon what the institution decides. As far as I am concerned I don’t really think we need a senate investigation into this one, I think it is simple and straightforward. But if the senators decide that they want an investigation [then] so be it.”

“Sir is there any way this administrative investigation could result in action being taken by the D.P.P.? We know that it doesn’t, a ministerial report or an administrative report does not necessarily feed into the D.P.P. Might though there be evidence in there which could be proffered to the DPP as actionable in a criminal case?”

“That’s for the D.P.P. to decide, I mean, you know how it works Jules, when you put the evidence out there then they will decide what part of that constitutes a criminal offence and if they decide that a part of it constitutes a criminal offence, they’ll take action.”
And this won’t be the last that we will be hearing of the passport scandal.

Mr Hulse i had a lot of respect for u….but now i realize that you are just like all the corrupt ministers. How can u go on television and talk all this nonsense. Why hasnt the police been involved in this matter? They are the ones that should be the ones investigating this entire scandal. A crime was committed and its not a petty crime its a HUMONGOUS ONE. Penner should be at the hattieville prison awaiting trial. Every in belize always get away with crime.

Hulse is saying and acting in a manner that is in line with his boss. If he goes forward with another agenda his political life will die at the hands of this PM.
Open your eyes country people, you think you are living in a democratic country, here is a news flash, you are in a dictatorship, with communistic tendencies. Godwin Hulse is a freaking hypocrite. If the PUP was in power, he would be screaming about an independent investigation of the passport scandal; however, because the UDP are in power, he thinks it is okay for the Passport & Immigration department to investigate itself. That is so stupid and illogical; I can’t believe that he can actually get on TV and say something so dumb with a straight face. He must believe that Belizeans are clueless. I would be very surprised if Belize doesn’t come in as number one on the list of most corrupt countries when the new list comes out. When will the people of Belize rise up and stop this madness? I hope it happens before it is too late and everything is gone.
