A deaf/mute was also killed by gunman as he fled the scene

Oscar Leonel Benitez

Within an hour, Honduran Oscar Leonel Benitez was murdered to protect the identity of the man who killed Juan Carlos Olmedo. In a tragic twist of fate, both killer and victim chose the same trail in the bushes behind Camalote – one was fleeing after a murder and the other was simply returning home after tending to his farm. Benitez was a deaf mute from birth, but that did not save him. He was shot three times as he rode his bicycle on the path. When he didn’t return home a search party went out and discovered his body at around seven thirty. Mike Rudon has the story.

Mike Rudon, Reporting

The man who killed Juan Carlos Olmedo escaped into the bush behind the home. From there he made his way on this trail which is used to access farmland. The land is divided up into plots where corn, cane, beans and plantains are cultivated by residents of the village. The killer is believed to have been making his way to this area where high-powered electricity lines bisect the land. From there he could have accessed several villages along the highway. Unfortunately, the gunman came across an unarmed farmer at the end of the trail, and shot him dead. That farmer, Oscar Leonel Benitez, was a deaf mute.

ASP Sinquest Martinez, O.C., Belmopan Police Formation

Sinquest Martinez

“We believe that it is the same person that shot Olmedo unfortunately shot Oscar Benitez.”

“Are you all figuring out that he was getting away, running out through that area when he came upon Benitez?”

ASP Sinquest Martinez

“That’s what it is showing us at this present moment; when he was exiting, he saw Benitez and unfortunately Benitez’s life was cut short. And it is so sad because he is a special needs person. It is so unfortunate and so senseless. He couldn’t talk to tell us what actually transpired unless if it was sign language.”

Berta Benitez

Benitez lived with his mother in this house beside Juan Carlos Olmedo’s home. His mother heard the shots which killed Olmedo but didn’t leave her home. She was worried about her son Oscar, who had left at about three to check on a small piece of land he was farming.

Berta Benitez, Mother of Oscar Benitez

“I was waiting for my son at five because he said he would be back at that time from the bush. But at five-thirty, he still had not reached so I went to the back with the little girl’s mother and her husband. I could not make it to where he was because of the mud on the path. And thank god that I didn’t reach because I don’t know what would have happened to me.”

A friend of the family found the body of Benitez at about seven thirty that night. He had been shot in the chest, neck and face and lay dead in a pool of blood. He was still holding on to the bike he was riding when he was gunned down by the killer. That unknown man then made his way along the electrical lines towards Teakettle, where Police almost managed to catch him.

ASP Sinquest Martinez

“Yes the Police did came upon him. Police did what they had to do, but unfortunately he escaped.”

“Oh the person escaped. Was there any kind of altercation at that time?”

ASP Sinquest Martinez

“I don’t want to go in depth with that.”

“Can you give us any information at all about how police came upon this fellow when he was making his getaway/”

ASP Sinquest Martinez

“While that was happening, we had police in the area that was conducting search through the hydro road and he was seen by the police and he was a bit quicker than us.”

Martinez says they are on the hunt for the killer and they will get him very soon. But that is little consolation for his mother, who says she doesn’t know where she will find the strength to go on without him.

Berta Benitez

“My son was marvelous; very affectionate with me. He was my right hand. He would help me with everything. When I was unable to get out of bed due to my arthritis, he would bring me my food. He was very obedient. Although he was deaf/mute, he was still an excellent son. He didn’t have any enemies. Everyone around here knew him.”

Oscar Benitez had no enemies, but a cold blooded killer took his life because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was only thirty-six years old. Mike Rudon for News Five.

Berta Benitez says her son wished to be buried in his hometown of Honduras, and tonight she is asking for financial help to make that wish come true. If you can help, you can call her at 662-6159.
