Lionman Triathlon, Billiards and Female Football on Sports Monday

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The 14th Annual Lionman triathlon was staged at the Sanlighter Promenade on Princess Margaret Drive yesterday as some 46 athletes made a bid for the 2013 title that featured a 1500 meter swim, a 24 mile cycle ride and concludes with a 6 mile run. But first let me give props to Master Athlete Kathleen Tillett who has participated in every Lionman event since its state 14 years ago and its remarkable how she keeps going. At the opposite end of the age spectrum, we find Jordan Santos who competes at the Junior level today. We would be remiss if we did not give Doctor Ramon Figueroa participating in his 14th Lionman and is always a threat to take the opening swim.
It’s a chilly Caribbean Sea that greets the swimmers at the start of the event which is quickly transformed into a raging splash powered by the will of the competition to win. At the turnaround point of the swim, Dimitry Cannon of Australia has established that she is in charge and the men will just have to live with it more importantly she serves notice to Shalini Zabaneh that she is in it to win it. Of course Cannon is the first swimmer to complete the swim and heads to the bicycle rack to begin her 24 mile bike ride. A minute 22 seconds later, Karl Borland pulls up out of the water. And then Doctor Ramon Figueroa swim in for the 3rd place finish and we must state that the top 3 finishers are all competing in the individual competition.

In fact, all top 5 finishers are looking for the individual title as Kent Gabourel pulls up 4th and is followed by the defending champion, Shalini Zabaneh, who is also the reigning cross country female cycling champion. 1st to finish the 24 mile ride is Nissan Arana of Heat and he hands off to Ashanti Carr but they would finish 6th. Byron Pope of Smooth Sailing pulls up 2nd that features Kira Eiley in the swim and the runner Alex Alvarado gets the tag and begins the 6 mile run.

1st to complete the run is Rhandi Lewis but he competes in the team category along with teammates Shalini Zabaneh and Brandon Cattouse. 9 seconds later, the 2013 overall champion emerges as Kent Gabourel sets a time of 2 hours 33 mins 30 seconds to grab the individual male title. He edged out Kenroy Gladden, who was looking for his 2nd Lionman title by 4 seconds. And hats off to Dr. Ramon Figueroa who takes 3rd place in 2 hours 44 mins 42 seconds. Despite showing signs of some fatigue, crossing the finish line Shalini Zabaneh successfully defended her title and she remains Belize’s most outstanding female athlete. The Australian, Dimitry Cannon had to settle for 2nd place while Kira Eiley rounds out the top 3 in the female class. In team class, Sagitun took the victory featuring Shalini Zabaneh, Brandon Cattouse and Rhandi Lewis. Smooth Sailing featuring Kira Eiley, Byron Pope and Alex Alvarado finished second while San Cas with Denise Diaz swimming, Jeovanni Leslie cycling and Luis Haulze running picked up 3rd place.

In Billiards news, Dibo’s of Cayo pull out the stick beating O.W.’s Tijuana Pool Tournament staged at Malibu Beach in Dangriga. The winner, Dibo, takes home $3,000, individual trophies and 12 cases of Guinness—not a bad haul indeed.

Turning to the football scene, the Atlantic Bank female football championship 2 game series got off Saturday at the MCC grounds as Ladyville Jaguars took on triple B. Triple B looks to open the scoring early when Kaina Martinez gets this ball into the hot and Iris Centeno takes a crack at goal only to be denied by the keeper, Claudia Martinez. Ladyville Jaguars go to the set piece for a stab at goal and maybe Marcelina Ramos should have done better with this chance. Meanwhile, Brithney Nunez does deserve a yellow card for this brutish attack on Miriam Villamil. Kaina Martinez then looks to open the scoreboard with this left foot launch that veers outside the target. So we go to 2nd half and immediately look to score as Jenisha Scott comes up with a nice push only to be denied by Claudia Martinez.

In the meantime, Iris Centeno gets this one on one look at goal and a player of her caliber should have made it count. Things get a bit sticky when Kaina Martinez bodies Sarah Arzu off this ball; the loose ball is redirected back to goal and against Martinez comes up empty. Kaina might have been a marked player after that because Shanell Jones attacks her with reckless abandonment for which the referee rightly chases her off the field. Despite the numerical advantage, Triple B could not come up with a goal; settling for the scoreless stalemate. Thus Game 2 moves to the F.F.B. Stadium at Belmopan on Saturday at 3 p.m.  This match will produce the 2013Champion. On the undercard, at 1 p.m. Gentle Touch of Esperanza takes on Dangriga Pumas for 3rd place.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
