San Pedro woman is disfigured in a horrific accident

There was a traffic accident in San Pedro Town early this morning. Two persons were injured when the Polaris they were travelling in slammed into a fence. The injured victims are nineteen year old Julia Mejia, a waitress at a local bar, and Giovanni Guerra, a tour guide, both of Ambergris Caye. The accident occurred at around two-thirty this morning at the corner of Caribeña Street and Barrier Reef Drive. San Pedro Police are reporting that a team of officers were on routine mobile patrol on Barrier Reef Drive when they observed a four-seater Polaris slam into a parked golf cart. The vehicle then rammed into the Heritage Bank fence and fled the scene. The mobile set chase and later detected that the same Polaris had crashed into a building at the corner of Caribeña Street and Barrier Reef Drive, knocking down a portion to the Belize Bank concrete fence. The vehicle was later cornered on Pescador Drive. When it hit the Belize Bank fence Julia Mejia was thrown out of the cart and fell to the ground. She was rushed in an unconscious state to the San Pedro Poly Clinic II and was later airlifted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. She received injuries to her face, mouth, teeth, left leg and her left ear was severed.  According to Police, Mejia is listed in a stable condition but will need reconstruction surgery to the head and face. Giovanni Guerra, also a passenger in the Polaris, received a broken left hand and complained of chest pain. At the time of the accident, the Polaris was driven by thirty year old Matias Kunil, an employee of BAHA, attached to the San Pedro Branch. Officer Commanding the San Pedro Police Department, Superintendent Luis Castellaños told News Five that he strongly believes alcohol was a factor and urine samples were taken from Kunil and sent to a forensic laboratory. Late this evening, Kunil was formally arrested and charged for Driving a Vehicle Without due Care And Attention, Driving a Motor Vehicle With Alcohol above the Prescribed Limit and two counts of Negligent Grievous Harm to Mejia and Guerra. The Polaris is issued to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority and is the property of the Agriculture Department through G.O.B.
