President Obama weighing possible responses to military action against Syria

Going into the weekend, military action appears imminent against Syria by the United States. On Tuesday, the U.S. president Obama said that he was weighing possible responses to what the U.S. calls a major chemical weapons attack in Damascus by the Syrian government claiming that close to one thousand five hundred persons were killed. The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is quoted as saying that the U.S. is ready for the eventuality should the president go down that road. This afternoon, the U.S. Embassy in Belize issued a short statement saying, “The Government of the United States of America assesses with high confidence that the Syrian Government carried out a chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs on August twenty-first, 2013 killing at least one thousand four hundred and twenty-nine Syrians, including at least four hundred and twenty-six children.  Our high confidence assessment is the strongest position that the U.S. Intelligence Community can take short of confirmation.  President Obama addressed the possibility of military action earlier today.

The United States has been approaching its allies, but we note that the UK parliament on Thursday voted against the strike on Syria.
