…but hit the road jack to Amin Hegar

But while Cordel Hyde is tentatively on the way in, the door has been slammed shut in the face of Belmopan P.U.P. political figure Amin Hegar. Hegar narrowly lost to incumbent John Saldivar in 2012, and was considered to be the P.U.P.’s choice for the next elections. But a month ago, newcomer Patrick Andrews announced that he would be contesting on the P.U.P. ticket in Belmopan. One week later, Hegar announced that he would be bowing out and supporting Andrews. And peace reigned in the P.U.P. valley until earlier this week when Hegar announced that he would be coming back, by popular demand. But while that might be his intention, it’s not going to happen – at least, not if Deputy Leader Julius Espat has his way.

Julius Espat, Deputy Leader, P.U.P.

“There’s no return when you make a statement to your party leader and you tell your party leader and your deputy party leader that I will endorse Jules Vasquez for this and that is a commitment that you make to us. You cannot change your mind again because then you are being dishonest with the leader of the party and you are being dishonest with yourself and you are being dishonest with the people you are saying that you want to represent. So there is no coming back when it comes to that Jules and you have to be serious.”

“So you are saying he cannot offer himself for a convention?”

Julius Espat

Julius Espat

“If you disrespect your party leader, I don’t see how.”

Reporter

“He said that when he endorsed Mister Andrews, he did it under the understanding that there will be no division under the party; there will be unity. But he says that since now, it appears that there is a division.”

Julius Espat

“What’s the division?”

Reporter

“I think he interprets Miss Logan running…”

Julius Espat

“But that’s not division; that’s democracy.”

Reporter

“He says that there is not unity behind one persons.”

Julius Espat

“No no, democracy is about people putting in their names with true intentions and we can’t stop that; we should never stop that. But that was not the discussion. The discussion is that I think that Patrick Andrews is the best candidate for Belmopan; therefore I am giving him full support…Jules remember it is not that he spoke to me and the party leader alone you know. He spoke to Mister Pat Andrews, he called a meeting of his executive and told them please I want you to endorse Mister Andrews. He went to that meeting with his people and Patrick’s people and publicly made that statement. He made calls to his supporters to support Patrick. So I don’t understand where this is coming from.”

Reporter

“He said his people didn’t want to support Patrick; they want him.”

Julius Espat

“Well we are living in a different world.”

Including Hegar and Andrews, four persons have announced that they will be contesting on the P.U.P. ticket in Belmopan.

  1. Ricky Malthus says:

It is not logical, Julius. Why should the Scumbag Cordel Hyde get a hero’s welcome back after he maliciously schemed and implemented a nefarious plan to benefit himself and the near destruction of the PUP. Hyde is dispensable. The people don’t want him .

  2. history minded says:

Now isn’t this a turn of events… If only we had investigative journalism and get the inside details.

  3. Karim says:

We see the PM go against his words and never know anything when asked. Amin announced to the nation of Belize that he is endorsing Patrick Andrews. A man’s word is a mans word. It’s no different than signing a contract. How can we trust someone who lies to the nation, himself, the world because these news are seen worldwide?
