U-20 women football national team headed to UNCAF competition

The under-twenty female football team is leaving Belize on Tuesday to represent Belize in the UNCAF tournament in Comayagua, Honduras. The team has been preparing since July for the tournament which is a qualifying game for the CONCACAF elimination games that will be held in the Cayman Island in January. The UNCAF tournament is broken down into two groups with Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador in group one and group two comprising of Panama, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. But how prepared is the national team? News Five spoke with Football Federation of Belize (F.F.B.) Executive, Cruz Gamez and Women’s Director of the F.F.B., Gina Zabaneh, who say that the team is strong.

Cruz Gamez, Executive Member, F.F.B.

“As you know being Belizeans we all expect to have a good show and be able to win and that is the main goal that we are going for…to classify as number one and hopefully with the skills that these young ladies have that we will be able to achieve that and that is the primary goal to have first place in this tournament.”

“Preparations have been going on since July under the coaching staff of Mister Kent Gray. And they have been in camp every week since July for Monday to Thursday. They have been pushing hard and honestly I think this is the strongest female team we have to send out.”

“How were the members of the team selected?”

Gina Zabaneh

“Each district association had to do a scouting program for us and they sent their best five in. And from there we took the breakdown and now we got where we got.”

“With the new executive of the F.F.B., we are trying to promote female football at the best level that we can—starting from grassroots right up to the elite level. So this is one of our plans to have as much participation for females. The same way the males participated in various international tournaments it is the same way that we want to do with the females. As we all know FIFA tries to promote female football at the highest level and that is one of our mandates to do.”

The first place teams from each group automatically advances to the CONCACAF U-20 elimination. The second place teams will play on the seventeenth of September for second and third place…where the winner will also advance. The CONCACAF elimination game is a qualifier for the July 2014 World Cup in Canada.
