Commuter run-over by bus
A commuter experienced a frightening ordeal this morning when she exited a D and E passenger bus. Raquel Burke, a resident of Bainsville Area in Hattieville, was injured as she got off the bus at a pedestrian crossing in Hattieville in close proximity of the police station. When Burke landed on the ground, her right leg was run over by the passenger bus. Before police could get to the scene, concerned passengers placed Burke in the pan of a black pickup truck and she was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. A News Five crew witnessed the traffic mishap as it occurred. Sharlett Jacobs says that she was seated behind the driver when the incident happened.
“I got on the bus about two minutes or so before and I asked the driver to sit in from because I was coming right over and the bus was already full. So the lady that was injured, her children were right at the police station waiting to come on the bus, but the driver signaled to them that he cannot take anymore and that another bus was already on its way to pick up the passengers that were there. When the bus passed the bump, she got up saying that she wanted to get off because her children were there. One of the older children got off to go and get the younger ones and the driver asked what’s happening and I told him that the lady wants to get her children from the lane because they are waiting for her. So what happened was that she made to come off and the driver asked what is happening and then she said I need to go and get the children. And then he said you can’t get off as yet and it is unfortunate. Everything just rolled over after that and it happened so quickly and unfortunately she was injured in the process before we could really see what exactly was happening.”

“You came out…can you assess what the extent of her injuries were based on what you saw on the street?”

“Well I photographed the incident as well for those that will be needing some pictures. It was very extensive the damage to her leg stemming just a little above the need and all the way to the ankle of the feet was severely injured. And so we had another, a villager that was passing at that time; my uncle I asked him if he could please assist in taking the lady down. I did call for an ambulance and I asked for somebody from the shed to get the officers to speed the process so that she was not able to lose as much blood as having her wait until the ambulance comes.”
The driver of the bus has since been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
