Can Belize host an international 3X3 basketball event?

Paul Thompson

Sport Development Manager for FIBA Americas, Nestor Rodriguez, recently concluded a successful visit to Belize. The purpose of the visit was to assess whether Belize is a viable location to host an international three by three event. FIBA also intends to assist the Belize Basketball Federation with its promotion of the three by three games while getting updated by the federation on its many programs. Several persons were trained as referees for three by three sports at the Anglican Cathedral College. But does Belize have the capacity to host an international event of this kind?

Paul Thompson, President, B.B.F.

“In regard to three on three basketballs, we are recognized in the world. We were selected last year to participate in the three by three U-eighteen World Championships where we made a name for ourselves beating China, Poland, Slovakia and the Netherlands. Based on that performance last year, we were selected again this year to participate in U-eighteen three by three World Championships to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia at the ending of September. So we are preparing for that as well.”

Duane Moody

“I know he was here to assess whether Belize can host the next international three by three outing. What was the outcome of that? Does Belize have the facilities to do so?”

Paul Thompson

“He hasn’t sent back a report yet, but based on our conversation and I am optimistic, three by three doesn’t need an indoor facility; it is something that’s played outdoors. And so I am very optimistic that something like this can happen in Belize. We have the resources in terms of venue. We have a beautiful country so I believe that hopefully mean that we can do this.”

Duane Moody

“What would this mean for Belize if we do succeed in hosting something like this?”

Paul Thompson

“It will continue to try to have our youth have hope to participate in these international events, it will try to build and make our sport become more visible more advanced.”

During his visit, Rodriguez also met with Minister of Sports Herman Longsworth, San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero and President of the Belize Olympic Committee Hilly Martinez.
