F.F.B. Executive, Rawell Pelayo detained by D.E.A.

Rawell Pelayo

As we mentioned earlier, two more members of the delegation may be coming home. The Football Federation of Belize had suffered a slight embarrassment when one of its players, Elroy Kuylen was sent back to Belize upon his arrival in the U.S.A.  Kuylen had overstayed his time in the U.S. on his last visit. But now the Vice-President of the F.F.B. Rawell Pelayo has been truly detained. Pelayo’s visa application took much longer than standard time to process.  Upon arrival in Houston last week, Pelayo was detained by the Immigration officers. Pelayo is currently an inmate at the Federal Detention Center in Houston and has been there since Monday, when he was detained in Houston as he attempted to board his connecting flight to Portland. Today a document from the Federal Bureau of Prisons search site delivered to all media by an anonymous source confirmed that information.  Unconfirmed reports are that Pelayo and F.F.B. President Ruperto Vicente were pulled out of the line at immigration and told that they would be escorted through a special V.I.P. section. That’s when Rawell Pelayo was whisked away by five Drug Enforcement Agency officers while Vicente was allowed to continue on.  Vicente confirmed his detention as he spoke to News Five via phone late this evening.

“We’re not privy to information via the U.S. authorities, but we have been informed that he is at a detention facility in Houston. And that’s all the information that we have at this point. So we do not have any more information.”

“Could you tell me what happened at the airport since you were with him?”

“Well I cannot chronicle that event because I am afraid of what repercussion we might suffer for that. So I do not want to go through that. And with all respect to Mister Pelayo and his family, I will not chronicle that event.”

Pelayo was appointed as the Vice-President of the UNCAF National Teams Commission for 2012-2015. Vicente did confirm that he has spoken to Belize’s Ambassador to Washington Nestor Mendez to ask for his intercession in the matter, but says he has not gotten any feedback on how that is going. Meanwhile, News Five spoke to the wife of Pelayo today and she told us that since he left on Monday, his family has had absolutely no contact with him, and one of his sons is on the way to Houston to see if he can get some information.
