Healthy Living gets tips on how to jumpstart your workout

It is never too late to start an exercise routine. But before you do, the best approach is to do some research and start gradually. There are also changes to your eating habits that will contribute to a healthy lifestyle and a good tip is to set challenges as part of your workout plan. This week Healthy Living prepares you to take charge of your body.

Getting started in a workout routine can be very hard. Physical Trainer of Fitness Belize, Joel McD outlines five tips to jump start your workout routine.

Joel McD, Fitness Trainer

Joel McD

“One of the main reasons and actually one of the most important tips is that they don’t know what to do; so what I comment is do some research and get informed. Take advantage of your favorite search engines and learn a little bit about health and exercise.   Research, get informed, educate yourself on what you need to know – basic information.  Jumps start tip number two would be to transition to healthy or to healthier eating. Those that are in an unhealthy eating plan should not just jump to a completely healthy eating diet. Transition slowly makes small changes along the way.”

So instead of quitting all bad habits cold turkey; Joel encourages a gradual shift. He feels this is more effective because it is far more manageable for a person who’s just getting started.

Joel McD

“So making small changes for example trade your mid-afternoon snack such as your cheese croissant, cut it out. Just cut it out. Replace your Doritos with fruit. Enjoy smaller portion sizes or just enjoy five small meals a day. Little changes like these can make a large impact on your healthy eating.   Jump start tip number three is to make exercise a part of your day. The best way to incorporate exercise is to keep moving throughout the day. Use your spare time as opportunities to take advantage of your exercising.  For example, while you’re watching your favorite show, use the commercial breaks as an opportunity to do let’s say twenty-five sit ups. I guarantee you’ll be doing more sit ups during that entire TV show that you would do in an entire month. Ultimately you’ll find that you’re able to incorporate exercise during spare times of your day.”

After the research, the shift in poor eating habits and the integration of exercise during our normal routine activities. The next step in Joel’s jump start is to challenge yourself – a thirty day challenge to be precise.

Joel McD

“This is one of my most favorite jump start tips, I always encourage this for my clients you commit for a thirty day personal challenge.  Commit to a personal challenge where for thirty days you commit to – let’s say you commit to working on your abdominals. Do twenty-five sit-ups before bed or after you get out of bed every day. The only problem with this is consistency and having to remember to do it. if you keep it up you’ll be able to see changes.  Thirty seems not too much but it’s just enough for you to say yes I can do it”

Once again, Joel’s thirty day personal challenge is to ease you into a routine with a goal that is achievable; especially for those who are just getting started. The final advice to jumpstart your work out is centered around motivation.

Joel McD

“There’s a common saying that says of the five people who you’re most interacted with that builds who you are. You want to make sure that one of those five persons represents the health and fitness that you’d like to become.  It becomes a constant reminder for you that this is what I want out of my health and fitness.  Surround yourself, there is tons of social media you can follow, you can find tons of public figures on Facebook, YouTube, becomes a constant reminder to yourself, this is what I want.”

Whether it be following fitness blogs, posting photos or keeping positive messages close; the purpose is to keep you motivated.

Joel McD

“For those individuals who find these tips helpful, but still thinks that “how to get started?” It’s all about being a better than you are at the current state. Just push of more, be better than you are now.”
