Mothers organise fundraising basketball tournament

Story PictureAs its second official event, this weekend Mothers Organized for Peace are coordinating a basketball tournament in an attempt to reduce tensions in Belize City. According to organisers, the idea is to highlight alternate activities to crime and violence while helping survivors handle reality.

?To me, most of the boys they like basketball ? like basketball dah eh passion, so that mek I have the basketball tournament. Why this Sunday? Well my son dead May fourteenth, Monday whe dah the fourteenth ah August wah mek he three months, and this da part ah fu he memory fu me. I just wah rememba he inna every way I could. Whe we deh plan fu do da no fu we, da fu the younger ones deh and fu help some of the mothers whe deh son fall to this kind of violence cause like I seh, my son dead, my son neva left me with no grandchildren. But then they have next mothers whe deh son fall and dah no all granny could afford fu help deh grandchildren. So if we could help some kind ah way, I no have it, but I no mind help she some kind a way, wah dozen exercise book, someweh, we could help somebody. Times hard fu everybody but at least we could come out, you know, unity dah strength and all we need da unity. Once we got unity, we alright…come together as one.?

?Well right now, we have out some leaflets whe deh ask different business places fu help. And Sunday coming we wah sell food and different thing fu try mek back wah lee money deh same way. We no just wah lay it pan respondent, we wah help weself. And with the manners whe we have and the police, we wah be fu we police to, all we want da manners and respect.?
