Rotarians stage comedy for a cause

Story PictureIf the belly laughs heard at the rehearsals are any indication, then the play that opens Thursday night at the Bliss is going to be a smash. And the best part is that its all in aid of a worthy cause. News Five’s Alyssa Noble has a preview.

Alyssa Noble, Reporting
You?ve seen them in ?Children, Children? and ?Cindy Relisha?? and for the next three days you?ll get to see these amateur Belizean actors portraying roles they say ?bring out the kruffy in all a we.?

Sandra McKay, Immediate Past President, Rotary
?Fi Mi Posse is another one of Patrick Brown?s production from Jamaica and the Rotarians and the Rotaracters will be acting on stage again. The type of content is good, clean family fun. It is laughter, singing, dancing about a group of children living on the streets and all that they are going through. Tough times, challenging times, but of course Patrick does it with a lot of humour involved in the content. And of course, there?s a happy ending to look forward to as well.?

The comedy will raise money to help children with serious medical needs through Rotary?s Gift of Life Programme. Seventeen Belizean boys and girls alone have been assisted this past year.

Yvette Burkes, Program Coordinator, Gift of Life
?The main recipients are patients with heart defects, primarily congenital heart defects. But in a third world country, even though Belize isn?t as bad as many of the third world countries around the world, we do have infectious diseases which are treated through this programme as well.?

While much of the average case cost of one hundred thousand dollars is absorbed by hospitals and physicians abroad, the Rotary Club in Belize aims to raise at least three thousand dollars for each child seeking treatment.

Yvette Burkes
?So really, we said that we were going to try to budget for ten children, which would be about thirty thousand dollars, but last year we exceeded that by quite a number. And it is our fervent wish that this year, we will be able to do even better.?

?Fi Mi Posse? will be playing at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at eight o?clock.

Sandra McKay
?We really are counting on the public?s support and are guaranteeing them that they can bring from the oldest to the youngest member of the family and everybody will have a good time. So come on out.?

Alyssa Noble reporting for New Five.
