East Indian festival debuts Tuesday

Story PictureOn Tuesday, the East Indian culture will take centre stage in Belize City as part of the first annual East Indian festival. Organised by the National Institute for Culture and History, the Hindu community and the East Indian Council, the event is scheduled to take place on the grounds of the House of Culture. Coordinators are advising visitors to come with an appetite for history … and food.

Nelson Emmanuel, Organizer
?East Indians do have a culture, and it?s a rich culture which was brought from India to Belize. This also is to help educate our younger generation about our East Indians. What they did to help to bring this country to what it is. For example, the educational system, within the agricultural system and within the government system. There are much more that we can look into to show that the East Indians were very, very industrious in bringing the country to where it is at present.?

Catherine Flowers, Organizer
?We have we food. We will have tacari chicken, spilt peas and callaloo, cohune cabbage, all the works. And we have our East Indian dancers, the who-she-me-seh dancers, the fire dancers and more. We have a lot of exciting things going on. But not at this time ? I won?t tell you. You?ll have to come there. You have to come out there and support us, and see what it?s all about. See that you bring some cash because there?s a lot of food.?

The East Indian festival will take place at the House of Culture between ten and six on Tuesday.
