Belize Medical Associates opens new cardiac unit

Story PictureSpecialized medical care in Belize has dramatically improved over the last decade. And today I was updated on the latest advancement in treating matters of the heart.

Dr. John Gough, Cardiologist, B.M.A.
?I hope now by coming back home we could offer a little bit more, and take these studies in another dimension.?

Jacqueline Godwin, Reporting
Today the Belize medical Associates officially opened its Centre for Studies and Advanced Cardiac Care. The facility is equipped to handle all non-evasive cardiological studies. According to Dr. John Gough, the latest technology in medicine can expose just how many Belizeans are living with cardiac conditions.

Dr. John Gough
?Sometimes we walk around with palpitations, we faint, we have light headedness and it is attributed to a lot of other things and no one thinks down the way of heart disease. Some of these arrhythmias could be lethal, so we are hoping to contribute to the preventative aspect of cardiology.?

The new service targets the adult population but as some cases reveal there are young patients who are also in need of the specialized care.

Dr. John Gough
?Since I got back four to five months ago, we have a lot of kids in Belize with congenital abnormalities. That I understand the Rotary Club has been aiding, helping these kids to go abroad for solutions. I think I will be participating in it as well, in the early detection of problems that could be solved and avoid fatalities in these kids.?

Gough says medical studies reveal that a number of familiar health conditions do lead to heart disease. These include Hypertension, Diabetes. People who smoke and are over weight are also at risk.

So will you get a heart attack when you get the bill for a complete cardiac evaluation? Well, the management at Belize Medical Associates tells us the average price tag is around thirteen hundred dollars.
