B.T.B. vehicle totaled by security guard on joyride

Laura Esquivel Frampton

The Belize Tourism Board is without one of its top rides this week. An Isuzu D-Max was used by a staff member who attended the Placencia Lobster Fest over the weekend. The employee returned the vehicle to the parking lot on Regent Street and handed over the vehicle keys to the security guard on duty. The guard apparently decided to leave his post and take the vehicle off the compound for a joyride. But the vehicle was brought back badly damaged. The guard works for Brints Security, a firm owned by Minister of State, Mark King. The Director of Tourism told News Five that the B.T.B. Board will look at their options regarding King’s security company.

Laura Esquivel Frampton, Director of Tourism

“The security guard was charged in court with six counts, including taking of the vehicle clearly without our permission. The B.T.B. is of the point of view that of course there is no way we would ever give permission for anything like that. The vehicle as far as we are concerned was taken without our permission and that security guard is liable for all the damages and we are pressing charges.”

“Was the security guard personally hired by the B.T.B. or is it a private firm that is providing security for the B.T.B.?”

Laura Esquivel Frampton

“It’s a private firm that provides security for the B.T.B. on the weekends and at nights. And so it was an employee of the security firm and not the B.T.B.”

Jose Sanchez

“I’ve read a report that you’re reconsidering I think it is Brint Security which is owned by Mister Mark King…that you are reconsidering a contract with King or Brints.”

Laura Esquivel Frampton

“I don’t know where you would have read any such report. The board of directors are the only ones that can make that kind of decision and we haven’t had a meeting on it yet. We are working with the police; we are in the very initial stages.”

Jose Sanchez

“There is an article on Channel Seven website where they said they communicated with you. And they said you, Laura Esquivel Frampton, are reconsidering the options when it comes to Brints Security.”

Laura Esquivel Frampton

“I’m sorry; I didn’t see that news broadcast. What I said is that we are looking at our options and the board will make that decision.”
