Christine Perriott Vs B.T.L.—judgment reserved by Appeals Court

Christine Perriott

The name Christine Perriott might not be as familiar to you now as it was just a few years ago, and that would be because the former Secretary-General of the Belize Communications Workers Union has been studying in Oklahoma for a couple of years. Perriott was terminated by Belize Telemedia in 2007 and she took the company to court for wrongful termination. In 2010, she was awarded three hundred and fifty thousand dollars in compensation. She appealed the case because she wasn’t satisfied with the amount, and she is back in the country for another day in court. News Five spoke to the former union activist on Tuesday about her plans.

Christine Perriott, Has Lawsuit Against B.T.L.

“The case was heard last week Wednesday and Thursday, two days, and right now they are reserving judgment. So you could say the case is finished, it’s completed. B.T.L. in essence conceded that they terminated me wrongfully and their fight was more on the quantum of how much I should get paid because of what they did…the wrongful termination that they did. So I’m just waiting for judgment…”

“So the judgment has been reserved but it’s a judgment on how much you should get rather than if they wrongfully terminated you?”

Christine Perriott

“Right! There are some matters that they argued, like severance. Severance is a very big issue that was argued. They are saying that they should not pay that and I am arguing for…it’s a lot of stuff. The fundamental matter for B.T.L. was quantum, but for me it was a breach of constitutional rights, a breach of exercising my rights in the union. It’s a fundamental matter for workers engaged in union activities so that was what I based it on and why we should be rewarded the amount that is just rightfully due to us.”

Perriott did not disclose the figure they are requesting, but she says that they are seeking exemplary damages, including settlement for injury to family and injury to home.

  2. Dan says:

  3. C Perriott says:

Dan, Rod is not wrong! while the case was brought in 2007, the very same people who stood with us and advised us to the bitter end, when they got in power they turned around and appealed the entire case. Yes, the very people who stood behind us, are the very ones who appealed the entire case in the appeal courts, and at the very day in court will drop their charges and conceded the termination was wrong. They did not want the courts to set aside Justice Muria ruling as they had requested in their appeal. They believe they can do you wrong knowing what they did was wrong and then pretend to have a change of heart and the other party is to say oh its ok! That is what Rod is referring to, they perceive they can do as they please…Well they are wrong and the judgment coming up will reveal it!!!

  4. Eye in the Sky says:

I think she is a greedy beech.

She should be happy with what she was awarded but wants a free ride through school on the backs of others.

The coward had to run leave Belize because no intelligent employer will give her a job.

Her future bosses on Oklahoma need to know what kind of a troublemaker she is.

@ Dan… The one thing I have learnt about rod the racist is that you can’t change stupid especially when you mix stupidity with racism you have a very dumb and volatile cocktail. You cannot reason with rod the racist even when you try to speak to it as if it was a two year old child. It will probably end up rebutting your correction by calling you a Judas Barrow lover and saying that you are a family or friend of the UDP or it will assume that just because you have intellect you are from some foreign country. The last one is the most comical of all as it illustrates its hate for itself as a Belizean as it thinks that Belizeans cannot be intellectuals. Dan take it from me just walk away and let stupid be, leave it alone and let it be stupid and racist all by itself. Obviously its family and friends don’t have any love for it or they would stop it from making itself look like an a$$. I stated before it seems to itself that it has intellect because it can make sentences and its family and friends know that it is wrong to discourage retarded creativity. Lord help us if a Hurricane comes this season as it will probably blame Barrow and the UDP and say because Barrow is a bigot more Hispanics homes blew down than Blacks. Rod the racist all I have to say to you is BURN!!! You made yourself look like the idiot you are yet again, LOL!!!

  6. Righteousness in Belize says:

Dan – this happened in 2007 when UDP was already in Government. At first they supported Mrs. Perriott, but when the GOB took over btl, the support was over. In this country, money talks and the rest walks…….
Happy that Mrs. Perriott did not back down even after all she went through and lost as a result of what was done to her because she fought for the rights of others in the union. More power to her!

  7. Righteousness in Belize says:

Eye in the sky would do everyone a favor by shutting up. Doesn’t know what he/she is talking about and was probably set up by btl to write that stupidity. All the best to Mrs. Perriott!
