Another murdered on Belize City Streets

Ashli Garnet

In Belize City, just before nine o’clock on Friday night, a Belize City man was shot and killed on Neal’s Penn Road, not far from where Michael Bucknor was killed about twenty four hours earlier.  Twenty-five year old Ashli Garnet died on the spot from gunshots that hit him on the forehead and abdomen. The gunman came from behind on a motorbike and after taking Garnet’s life he headed toward Central American Boulevard.  Garnet’s brother got the bad news by text. Duane Moody reports.

Twenty-four hours after sixty-one year old Michael Bucknor was executed on Faber’s Road, shots rang out once again. Approximately a block away from that crime scene, at the corner of Neal Pen Road Extension and Baldwin Avenue, laid the bullet-riddled body of twenty-five year old Ashli Zuniga Garnet. Garnet was heading to his Faber’s Road home when he was approached from behind by his assailant who was on a motorcycle. Several shots were fired at him hitting him on the forehead and lower left abdomen.

Voice of: Mark Zuniga, Brother of Deceased

“Wa sympathize text…sorry fi weh happen to your bredda. So he di read the text to me and I tell ahn mussi wrong number ih di text; dah mussi somebody else. Wah minute after that, the phone ring. Deh say bwai dehn just shot up yo bredda Ashli. And I still noh believe and I stay dehn like two minutes still kinda lost. Phone ring again and my neighbor down the street weh help me build mi house call me and say bwai dehn just shot up Ashli you hear about it. I say weh part? Ih say right through Pen road. I run downstairs—me and my balli—run down the step, jump ina my truck and we gone. When we gone, we see the man down there. I still noh believe it. The man on the ground; he and ih bike and ih three beers.”

“I received a phone call from a close friend, a police officer informing me that one of my employees just got shot. When he gave me the name, he said Ashli Zuniga and I said no, Ashli Garnet. So he say well but Dion dah Ashli. I need you to come to Pen Road fi identify the body. So I got up and drove down there and when I reached, I saw the body on the ground and immediately identified it as being Ashli Garnet.”

The father of one was employed for the past three years at Leslie Imports at mile one and a half on the George Price Highway. According to General Manager, Dion Leslie, Garnet left work at five-thirty on Friday to see his father.

“He’s been an outstanding working during that time. He always had a smile on his face. He was the type of employee that anything you would ask him to do, he wouldn’t quarrel, he wouldn’t bicker, he wouldn’t fuss; he would just go ahead and do it smiling.  He was a warehouse employee, doing delivers and any other chores that needed to be done around the office—delivering out-district, delivering within the city; cleaning…anything. So he’s been here since 2010…he first started working with us.”

It’s yet another member of the family killed by the gun in the urban warfare in the Old Capital. Garnet’s older brother Michael Skeet was killed back in 2004 also at the age of twenty-five. It is a tragedy that has the family completely shaken.

Voice of: Mark Zuniga

“Ih deh pan ih back, ih face di watch pan me. The man dead…I still noh believe it. when I roll over the man and put the man on the stretcher, I see like the man get one on ih side like by ih ribs…pan the next corner. Ih get like three. Ih get one ina ih head just like my bredda dead 2004. Ih dead…get one ina ih head back and it come through ih forehead…just like how my bredda get it 2004; exact way. Ih dead the same age of my bredda, twenty-five.”

Duane Moody

“Was he known to have any kind of enemies or anybody that woulda mi wah take ih life?”

Voice of: Mark Zuniga

“Ashli noh got no enemy like that. I noh wah say Ashli noh give trouble…Ashli dah noh trouble man. Ashli dah work to home. Ashli done paint back from 2000-add…I noh even remember the year when the police man dehn neva do wah proper investigation and dehn shoot somebody and from then Ashli get paint black and ih mi gone dah jail fi that. The case come up and dehn neva had no witness and dah mi just wah bogus. From the police dehn mi give ahn that charge dah man ever painted…from then ih get painted that he dah mi di gunman weh shoot balli.”

But “titi-man” as he was affectionately known was a father, a brother and a son and will be remembered by his family and friends for the loving person he was.

Voice of: Mark Zuniga

“Everybody weh know Ashli mien…Ashli straight…Ashli noh do nobody nothing mien. Jah knows…we dah noh people weh wah come on TV and say ih noh do it and know dehn pickney dah bad bwai. But Ashli noh do nobody nothing. Ashli noh give nobody. Everybody weh know Ashli, titi-man. Cause when ih mi younger ih mi born with wah cyst and then my ma mi ker ahn weh fi make dehn cut it. titiman, Ashli.”

Six point forty-five caliber Winchester brand expended shells were recovered from the scene and police are seeking a suspect in this recent homicide. Duane Moody for News Five.
