Major sporting highlights with James Adderley

Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. With Belize Telemedia waiting in the wings; Fresca Lady Rebels had to roll past the Belize Bank Friday evening inside Rogers Stadium to make it to the finals of the Belize Female Softball Championship 2013. We pick up the action in the 2nd inning all tied at 2 a piece. When Belize Bank pitcher Nicole Arnold hits Carla Robinson with this pitch, giving her a free pass to 1st base. With Robinson at 2nd base on a fielders choice Clarencia Jones hits Arnold all the way to the fence bringing home Robinson for the 3-2 lead. Power hitter Josephine Flowers then comes up to bring Jones home but Cindy Joseph at 3rd base for the Bank easily handles this grounder to throw out Flowers at 1st for the 3rd out. In the 3rd Lanisha Jones had an easy time getting out of the inning in a 1, 2, 3 fashion when she strikes out Tyra Morriera with this high fastball. Tack on another run for Lady Rebels in the 4th when Sharette Jones smokes Nicole Arnold to bring Lisa Jones all the way home from up.

In the 5th Clarencia Jones gets on base with this ball thanks to a defensive error. Josephine Flowers moves her along with this nice bunt and reaches safetly at first. Mertal Bailey follows up with another bunt that fills the bases for Fresca Lady Rebels. Up steps share the Vernon whose flier to the outfield is poorly played by the Bank and another run scores. The next batter Lisa Jones lets loose this long fly off Arnold which is caught but its good enough to allow Josephine Flowers to score. As a result Nicole Arnold is lifted and replaced by Ortencia Richards. The 1st batter she faces is Sharette Jones and she uncorks a wild pitch as Bailey scores. Patricia Thimbrel then hits Richards to bring home shortstop Sharette Vernon things would have been worse if this power swing by Carla Robinson had not been caught by the Heroic effort of Marsha Wills to end the inning with an 8-2 lead by the Rebels. Meanwhile folks Lanisha Jones looses control and hits Desiree Morales in the head and is fortunate not be hurt real bad, but the Bank is held scoreless in the bottom of the 4th. Fresca Lady Rebels go on to post the 8-4 final score and are into the 5 game Championship series against arch rival Belize Telemedia. Game 1 comes up tonight with game 2 on Wednesday and game 3 on Friday so stay tuned.

Turning to the table tennis scene, the 2013 Barrow and Williams summer open tournament staged at B.E.S. auditorium yesterday saw Carlos Cui take back to back Championships by beating Tyrone Tun in the open category. Fabio Carballo got past Harim Ochoeta to take the under 18 class while Petie Matus continues to dominate female play beating Nikki Chang to win the women category.

Turning to the cricket scene Brilliant of Crooked Tree was absolutely brilliant against Sunrise of Lords Bank on Saturday. Jermaine Smith erupted for 54 runs batted in, Wicketkeeper Shane Westby and Stephen Flowers both struck for 31 runs apiece and Arturo Wade added 23 as Brilliant went on to post the 179 to 102 big W and are off to the Championship. They’ll face Excellent of Double Head who trashed Berlan 135 to 95.

Finally in basketball news Tuff E Nuff took a 2-nil lead in the 5 game I.B.L. championship series by crushing No Limit 100 to 88 at Birds Isle Friday night. Ashton Edwards gets the defending champion going early after getting this tap from Rowe Roches going glass for 2 of his team high 23 points. Ashton would shoot fifty percent from the field and one hundred percent from the free throw line. Greg Rudon played large fro No Limit going to the left hand for 2 of his 30 points. Rudon would miss the 2 doubles by 1 rebound after totaling 9. He would share the game high in scoring with Leslie Jacob who lays up 2 of his 30 points tonight. Rudon and Jacob would score 60 of No Limit 88 total points. However watch this finish from Ashton Edwards when he receives this pass from Linden Galvez; he scores with his back to the rim. I guess when you’re hot you’re hot. In the meantime Russell Staine looks for a bucket right here but the attempt is victimized by a vicious block from Winston Pratt give the assist to Tyrone Edwards, give the bucket to Winston Pratt who hammers it home with a 2 handed jam. Pratt would hit 9 points in this outing. The only player other than Jacob and Rudon to hit double figures for No Limits is Vince Garbutt who stays with this play for 2 of his 10 game points. At the half Tuff E Nuff leads 52 to 35. They wouldn’t look back as they take the W in game 2 with a 100 to 88 final score.
