Guatemalan national shot in Chiquibul now suffers infection

There is word that a Guatemalan national who was shot by B.D.F. personnel in the Caballo Camp area of the Chiquibul is tonight at the KHMH being treated for a serious infection. The official report at the time of the shooting, on June third, was that Edgar Alexander Alveno allegedly fired on a B.D.F. patrol. He missed, but when the soldiers returned fire, Alveno was shot four times to the abdomen. He was given medical attention on the scene and then carried out of the jungle, a twelve hour hike to where an ambulance was waiting. After surgery at the San Ignacio Hospital, he was listed as critical but stable. When he recovered, he was transported to the Belize Central Prison to await his appearance in court. News Five understands that from prison, he was then taken to the Western Regional Hospital for further treatment and then returned to the prison. But that wasn’t the end of it. His condition worsened in the prison and he has now been transported to the K.H.M.H. where he is currently receiving treatment. At an official press conference two weeks ago, Prime Minister Dean Barrow explained that after an investigation into the incident, all sides were satisfied that Alveno was far within Belizean territory and he expected minimal fallout if any from the incident. That may be so on the high-level official front, but diplomatic sources tell us that there is a public outcry from Alveno’s family in Guatemala who are calling for their loved one to be taken back home to receive proper medical attention.

  1. Tom Beck says:

Illegal Guatemalan loggers serve very little useful purpose in Belize.
If nothing else, let them provide target practise for the BDF. They
are robbing your country, you ought to try and stop them.
