Awesome Sports Highlights with James Adderley

Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

We take you out immediately to the F.F.B. Stadium at Capital City Belmopan where the National Male Football Team of Belize continued its preparation for the Gold Cup inside the United States by taking on a handpicked selection of local players on Saturday. Coach Ian Mork is trying to fine tune the system he hopes will bring Belize a victory against the United States on July 9th at Portland, Oregon. For certain it’s a score moment for defender Tyrone Pandy when he makes this forward and is taken down by a dangerous slide just outside the 18. Fortunately Pandy would continue. Jerome James who did not make the team then launches this grass head burner at Shane Orio who handles the situation.

So we go to 2nd half and Everal Trapp triggers this corner kick that forces Glenford Chimilio to abandon his live to make the initial stop. Folks this is one of the reasons one must worry in those kinds of matches – Ashley Torres deals to Ian Gaynair inside the box and the defender hooks his right foot from behind as he tries to power this ball into the goal. A penalty kick is awarded but more importantly Gaynair escapes serious harm. Elroy Smith steps up for the conversion and he gives Glenford Chimilio no chance at the save as the National Team takes a 1-zip lead. Meanwhile the Jaguars look for more when Danny Jimenez deals to super strike Deon McCauley who fails to find the target. At the other end Woodrow West who took over goalkeeping duties for the Jaguars in 2nd half id forced to come up with a big time save and then gets help from his teammate to settle the situation. In the meantime Deon McCauley gets this open look at goal but is obviously not back to 100% after his recent injury even though he makes Glenford Chimilio work. Late in the ballgame Dalton Eiley gifts this ball to Jerome Jones who is denied the game equalizer by this monster save from Woodrow West. The ballgame ends in a 1-zip W for the National Team. Our boys leave the country on July 5th for their Gold Cup Opener against the U.S. on July 9th. In the meantime Channel 5 will air 2 football shows with the team. The 1st is scheduled for this Thursday June 27th and the other one will be aired on July 7th so stay tuned.

Turning to the cycling scene yesterday some 30 elite riders were suited up for the 16th B.C.A. National Road Championship which blasted off from Orange Walk, travelled through the Boom Circuit and headed to Mount Hope in Cayo where it wings to finish with 2 laps around the Belmopan Ring Road for a total of 115 miles. The peloton remained mostly compact until around mile 46 on the Phillip Goldson Highway when this 8 man unit which includes Jose Choto, Shane Vasquez, Roger Troyer, Erwin Middleton, Angel Tzib, Jairo Campos, Giovanni Choto and Byron Pope. By the time the race turns on to the Boom Circuit the lead has ballooned to some 12 riders. Forty-five seconds later this 1 Man chase group makes this presence felt and remain within stalk distance. At the Hattieville Junction it’s 20 riders holding on to the torrid pace. Around mile 35 on the George Price Highway we find a 4 man lead – Nissan Arana, Byron Pope, Roger Troyer and Giovanni Choto. At the Belmopan Junction the big 4 remain in control of the action as they lead to mount Hope. Byron Pope hugs the curve 1st at the turn around point at Mount Hope with Roger Troyer and Nissan Arana behind while Giovanni Choto finds himself a bit off the pace but is a part of the lead 4. Angel Tzib and Henry Morriera meanwhile takes serious aim at the leader. Next on the chase are Robert Liam, Peter Choto and Geon Hanson. Nevertheless the 4 man lead remains intact as the race heads into Belmopan for the big finish. As we go to the finish we must complain that the race official obstructs our camera angle – nuff said. But we nevertheless can safely say that Byron Pope of Bennys Megabytes takes this title in a time of 5 hours 22 minutes and 37 seconds. Pope set a record of 5:11:41 in 2011 and it still stands. He beat out the defending champion Roger Troyer of Belikin Western Spirit who pulled up second. The Nations Individual time trial champion 2013 Nissan Arana of Depredadores takes 3rd while Giovanni Choto takes 4th place. In the meantime give it up for Master rider Robert Liam Stewart who beats out Angel Tzib for 5th place with his time of 5:24:26.

Finally folks we caught up with the game 1 of the 5 game I.B.L. championship which got off Friday night at Birds Isle as Tuff E Nuff looks to repeat at the expense of No Limit. Its Tuff E Nuff that gets a quick start as Ashton Edwards strikes for the 1st of t his 5 three pointer tonight. He would put up 17 points in this one. Faron Lauriano gets fed from Tyrone Edwards so he says thanks with a 2 handed jam for 2 of his 20 game points plus pulled down 14 rebounds. However Vince Garbutt comes up with a loose ball and puts it back for 2 of his 12 points. No Limits boasts a 23-19 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. In the 2nd Kurt Burgess knocks down this big 3 over Lauriano and would put up an impressive 2 doubles of 22 points 22 rebounds. At the other end Desmon Edwards deals to Winston Pratt who gets the bucket in the paint for 2 of his 28 points and would also tally 13 rebounds. Meanwhile Winston Pratt shows that his left hand is not an ornament with this bucket and then Raul Roches reaches Ashton Edwards with this pass and he lands the triple for another three pointer and at the half Tuff E Nuff leads 46 to 43. Kurt Burgess keeps No Limit as he hits the paint for 2 points. Kashief Thomas of international fame then sinks the triple and would put up 15 points – at the end of 3. However Lauriano is an unstoppable force around the rim and at the end of three Tuff E Nuff 66 – No Limits 60. In the 4th its sell Tuff E Nuff, Kashief Thomas can’t handle Winston Pratt who makes three the hard way. Tuff E Nuff goes out to post the 90-75 big W in game 1.
