Schools across country close in wake of Tropical Depression #2

The depression has affected schools in the southern, central and western districts while in Cayo District, students were sent home at three p.m. The northern districts, however, have been sparred and classes continued as scheduled.  News Five’s Jose Sanchez has a report on the schools.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

The downpour of Tropical Depression Two has dampened the start of the school week. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports had sent a notice to the students, teachers managers ordering the closure of educational institutions in several districts. After consulting with the District Emergency Management Organizations and school managements, the Ministry cancelled classes in Toledo, Stann Creek, and the Belize District for the afternoon. Across Belize City, schools were closed as the water rose on some streets. It also rose on parts of the city that are heavily trafficked. However, along the coastline, by the Marine Parade, the rough seas tempted to cross over the sea wall. Near the Princess Hotel and the Mexican Embassy, the brunt of the weather cascaded over the wall. But for now, schools like St. Joseph Primary, All Saints, and Pallotti High School remain closed. The Ministry of Education and NEMO continues to monitor the situation and will provide further updates on Tuesday morning. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

In Cayo, classes ended at three p.m. with the exception of Saint Margaret and Armenia villages which closed at midday due to rain.
