Belizean poets launch audio-visual exhibit

Story PicturePoetry has been a budding form of artistic expression in Belize and this week, organizers of a new show are hoping to cultivate a whole new bunch of writers. News Five’s Alyssa Noble explains.

Alyssa Noble, Reporting
This morning, the Belizean Poets Society launched the first ever Belizean poetry exhibit at the Bliss Institute for the Creative Arts.

Kahlilah Enriquez, Poets
?I?m going back to my roots. Respecting the virgin growth and truncating the tainted. It is not a complicated operation. The introspection was more difficult. Now the scissors do the speaking for my soul. Cutting the years of hatred away releasing the tight curls that lay hidden and bondage. Now they spring forth in crooked spirals and fluffy afro puffs. They zigzag around my head in cornrows liberated. No longer suppress by a perm. No longer told to relax. No longer forced to lie to myself.?

Carrie Fairweather, Poets
?I?m a walking this dotted line of life. In use I didn?t had a clue that each day was a written page. Filled with actions of my own captured in glamorous memories stored to be retrieved at any time by recipients of my deed or me and me alone.?

Jahseed X,
?We versatile. We can?t spoil. We no come fu rass wa lee while. We no beg handshake and we no fake smile. We give the gold to the golden child. The rhymes weh we have long gawn down the river Nile, stronger than Cashew wine. The rhymes weh we have C.I.A no got pan file, because we versatile. We can?t spoil. We no come fu rass wa lee while, but we give the gold to the golden child.?

According to the society?s president Adele Ramos Daly, the exhibition includes the work of Belize?s prominent writers.

Adele Ramos Daly, President, Belizean Poets Society
?Some of the persons found in the exhibit they are from some of our veteran poets like for example the Honourable George Price, John Alexander Watler, Dr. Corrinth Lewis, Evan X Hyde, Myrna Manzanares. Then we also have some selections from more contemporary poets. You?ll find some pieces for example from Kahlilah, Irwin and Ansel. Actually we have CD recording and DVD?s playing, so it?s really an audio visual exhibit, and so you can look at some of the shows we had in the past, you can listen to CD?s recordings. So there?s a lot in there for people who love poetry.?

In addition to the exhibition, the Society also launched ?Sunset Jewel?, volume one of the Belizean Poets Anthology.

Adele Ramos Daly
?Well the launch of the anthology, is one concrete result of the efforts that we?ve made in last several months. In the anthology you will see an array of poems all from Belizean writers and there were actually entries in last year?s contest.?

On Friday morning, there will be a special reading session at the Bliss Institute for Creative Arts where preschoolers and children will have the opportunity to listen to Belizean poetry readings by beauty queens. Reporting for News Five, I am Alyssa Noble.

The Belizean Poets Exhibition is open to the public and free of cost. The show ends this Friday.
