Acros and O.W. Alpha fight to football draw

Story PictureGood evening. I?m James Adderley with this latest dish of Sports Monday. Week four of the R.F.G. Cup Tournament brought Alpha of Orange Walk to the M.C.C. Grounds against Acros Lake of Belize City, as both teams continue to search for win number one of the season.

Nevertheless it?s the visitor from the north making the first move as Jesus Lozainez finds Otoniel Sandoval whose left foot launch is potent, but slightly off target.

A few minutes later Sandoval gets another look at goal. But O.W.?s Alpha still can?t grab the lead off this effort.

It?s all Orange Walk in the first half and we?re forty-five minutes in when Otoniel Sandoval catches up with this pass to smack a wicked left foot into the net to give Alpha a 1-zip lead as we go into intermission.

Folks were just a minute into second half when Acros gets its first highlight. Eden Rowley directs their spot kick into the danger zone. The rebound reaches Jeramine Zuniga and his right foot powers home the equalizer for the city team.

Zuniga then gets a chance to give his team the lead. but his offering sails high this time.

In the meantime, the third attempt at goal by Jermaine Zuniga does not really impress the scoreboard.

Will this trip down field be fruitful for the Acros striker? Apparently not as the Orange Walk goalkeeper easily strips Zuniga of the pill.

Meanwhile it?s getting late so Alpha tries to steal the big w on this press as Renito Suazo fires a goal, but it?s not to be.

In fact things really get frantic in the closing moments as Acros tries to force the big win. Delroy Andrews fires the rebound reaches Nigel Cayetano, but in the end the O.W. defence holds firm.

On this press Delroy Andrews gets this clear header at goal, but the ball inches outside the sticks. Both teams settle for the 1-1 draw in regulation time.

In other action around the league Hankook Verdes bombed Belmopan Bandits 5-zip, while Wagiya and F.C. Belize battled to a scoreless stalemate.

Looking ahead to the schedule Belmopan Bandits will host Acros Lake Saturday at seven thirty p.m., while on Sunday Wagiya gets a visit from Hankook Verdes and F.C. Belize faces Alpha at the M.C.C. Grounds.

Meanwhile folks we were to air an interview with F.F.B. President Dr. Bertie Chimilio but he has pushed it back for legal reason. Nevertheless, he informs us that he is the only FIFA recognized President of the F.F.B. and elections of officers will be held within six weeks. Of course we?ll keep you posted.

Turning to the cricket scene, Saillos of St. Paul?s grabbed the National Division Two Cricket Title on Saturday by crushing Western Eagles of Rancho Dolores 284-123 runs. Robert Cassasola played big for 73 runs and taking 3 wickets. Derrick McFadson also stepped up with 64 runs and 3 wickets in the big w and we say congratulations.

In the meantime we have been officially informed that Excellence of Double Head Cabbage did not take the field for game two on Saturday, this is after forfeiting game one according to the Belize Rural Cricket Association. So Brilliant of Crooked Tree takes this year?s title without taking the field. Sunrise of Lords Bank and Wicked 11 of Flowers Bank will now battle for second place in division one.

In cycling news, the Tour de Santinos for Cat Four and Cat Five riders over thirty years old is set for September seventh to September eleventh in a five stage package so stay tuned.

We also want to remind you that Baranathon 2006 will present its second edition on December second at eight a.m. This kayak race travels from Puerto Barrio, Guatemala, through Labuga, Livingston and finishes at Punta Gorda, Belize. A registration fee of two hundred dollars per two man team must be paid by thirty-first October. First prize is five thousand dollars and second two thousand five hundred and third two thousand. We are airing this particular advert early so you can get in shape in time to make the grade and make that five thousand dollars.

That is it for now though. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah, over all I am James Adderley.
