Mas camps count down to carnival

Story PictureThe carnival road march gets underway on Saturday and as the clock ticks down bands all over the city are making last minute preparations. Last night News Five’s carnival commentator Ava Lovell visited a couple of northside Mas Camps and found that there was no shortage of enthusiasm.

Carla Flowers, Band Leader, Mother Nature
?Most of the women who are in the band are mothers, you can count the people them who are not mothers in the band. Right now we have about seventy-five people dancing with us. We have sixty-five females and ten males dancing with us. Everybody calling me and finding out what I was brining out this year, and they tell me go for it this year and bring out crochet again. Because I had to do all the work, I started in May and I had so many people, I couldn?t handle it and so I turned back nearly a hundred people.?

?This year sponsorship for me was very difficult, but how I came up with my funds, I make little fundraising fairs. I had two of that and I had my pageant and that made it possible to have my carnival group going this year.?

David Matus, Band Leader, Erotic Mas Band
?Erotic Mas Band, like you said, has been in existence for three years now and presently we are last year?s champions for king, queen and the road march. So are out right now the defend the title again once more.?

Ava Lovell, Reporting
?So what can everybody expect different from Erotic, different from last year??

David Matus
?Last year the band only had two sections led by a king and a queen. This year we?re having four sections and we plan to have four large costumes?for each section we have a huge costume to lead that section.?

?The theme for this year for Erotic Mas Band is ?Que Viva Belize!? And since we are celebrating our twenty-fifth year of anniversary, we have a special section, which is all females, twenty-five ladies in that section. We have three other sections depicting the battle of St. George?s Caye.?

Channel Five’s live coverage of the Carnival Road March, with Ava Lovell and William Neal, kicks off at two on Saturday afternoon.
