Will Belizean be next Chief Justice of O.E.C.S.?

Story PictureA newspaper report out of Grenada claims that the next chief justice of the O.E.C.S. Supreme Court may be none other than Belize’s Denys Barrow. Citing a “well placed legal source” the September ninth edition of Grenada Today indicates that previous front runner for the post, acting Chief Justice Brian Alleyne of Dominica, has failed to achieve the required unanimous support of the sub-regional group’s Prime Ministers. According to the newspaper’s source, the Grenadian Prime Minister turned thumbs down on Alleyne due to his previous ruling against the Grenadian government and a belief that Alleyne was biased against the Keith Mitchell administration. Barrow, who earned a reputation in Belize as an attorney of formidable intellect, currently serves as a justice on the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal and is highly regarded by the region’s legal establishment. The only stain on Barrow’s career were allegations of involvement in the scandal over the privatisation of BELIPO, the nation’s intellectual property registry. Ironically, the person doing the accusing was his own brother, Leader of the Opposition Dean Barrow. Denys has yet to be asked by the media to explain his role in the BELIPO affair.
