Cops foil robbery, wound suspect

Quick police action is believed to have foiled an armed robbery and put one suspected thief behind bars. According to the cops, around ten last night, a mobile patrol was dispatched to the Shell gas station at mile one and a half on the Northern Highway after an anonymous caller alerted authorities that a robbery had been planned for that business. When the officers arrived at the scene, one of the cars at the pump was a gold four door Ford Tempo with two men inside. The cops immediately approached the duo and ordered them out the vehicle. But the men simply started up and sped off … with the police close behind. A high speed pursuit ended on Peter Seco Street near Belize Water Services when the car ran off the road and crashed into a canal. The driver managed to escape by swimming to the other side but his would be accomplice is tonight accused of pulling out a firearm and aiming it at the cops. One of the officers responded to the alleged threat by shooting the suspect in the leg. The injured man, identified as Edwin Flowers, was rushed to the K.H.M.H. for treatment and remains in stable condition under police guard. Authorities say the weapon reportedly used to threaten the responding officers was thrown in the murky depths of the canal by the suspect before he could be detained. The driver of the car is still being sought for questioning. If you have any information that may assist investigators, please contact the nearest police station.
