Early afternoon fire in the City

There was an early afternoon fire in the City. It caused a stir in the neighborhood because the wooden building was located in congested area on Freetown Road. The building was unoccupied but previously housed a grocery story. The Fire Department arrived on the scene and was able to contain the fire from spreading and causing further damage. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A mid-afternoon fire on Freetown Road today, has eviscerated a two-storey structure next door to Bethel Primary School.  Residents in the area reported smelling smoke shortly before two o’clock as it blew in a westerly direction. Shortly after Errol Garbutt Jr., whose business is just across the street, discovered that the abandoned building, recently a Chinese grocery store, was engulfed in flames.

“We mi di sihdown and di play some dominoes as usual ahn we smell smoke.  Once we smell smoke we haffi come out cause di house dehn congested round ya right, di house dehn eena wah small area.  Soh once we smell smoke, ahn we work twenty-four seven soh we always deh pan di alert.  Ih ketch pan di back part, start ketch from di back part, as ih ketch eena di back part we call di fire station right away.

Reaction to the inferno was fairly rapid.  At the scene, personnel from the National Fire Service worked feverishly in an attempt to contain and quell the blaze.  Dozens of residents and passersby stood watch.

“What was the response time from the Fire Department?”

Errol Garbutt Jr.

“Da mi wah lee delay but good enough, good enough, good enough.  Dehn good, dehn do dehn job.”

The vacant building, its upper flat wooden, was reportedly hit by thieves a few weeks ago.  They managed to steal fixtures, including windows, from the construction.

Errol Garbutt Jr.

“Ih abandoned bout two months.  Dehn guys start to move things offa it, some burglar bars and soh. Di building mi got sohn burglar bars, dehn move di burglar bars dehn and di person dehn come, bring police and everything and then di house just left deh.  Last week dehn move di burglar bars dehn soh dis week ya ih ketch.  I noh know, I noh wahn specify dat I sih somebody light it or something happen, yo know.”

An investigation into the cause will be conducted by fire officials to determine whether it is the result of arson, as strongly suspected by a handful of residents in the immediate surroundings of the building. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
