2013 Human Development Report; where does Belize stand?

The 2013 Human Development Report was launched in Mexico City on Thursday. The study which extended to one hundred and eighty- seven countries looked at the levels of longevity, education and income. Narrowing it down to our region, the report found that by 2030 Latin America and the Caribbean will be home to one in ten members of an emerging global middle class. The lesson stated by the report is that, “The South needs the North but increasingly the North also needs the South.” So where does Belize stand in all this?  Belize is ranked at ninety- six, which reflects that there are areas that have worsened since the previous report which placed us at ninety-three; but still we have an average growth in human development indicators. Some of the notable statistics are as follows: Child labor in Belize is an alarming issue with more than one third of children between the ages five to fourteen or forty percent of the population is working. There is a larger participation of men in the labor force with over eighty-one point eight percent which doubles the number of women employed.  As to poverty, Belize’s poverty line is at a high thirty three point five percent. Contributing factors are in education, health and a low standard of living. In regards to crime, the homicide rate per one hundred thousand persons weighed in at forty-one point four percent for Belize which was second highest in Central America, with El Salvador being the first at sixty-nine point two percent. In respect of the Caribbean, Belize is doing better than Haiti and Guyana but countries like Jamaica are ahead of the jewel.

Belize is only better than Haiti but worse than Jamaica !

What an embarrassment for the people of Belize and the Politicians.

Belize has the ability to be in the top 5 if we had honest & intelligent people in government.

Every aspect of life is in the drain since this pm and gov. Have been in power

  3. Storm says:

The child labor rate and adult unemployment rates are disgusting pictures of what Belize has made itself — children are forced to work because their parents won’t work.

We need to turn things upside down and start over. Government should focus on doing a very few things, and doing them well. National defense and law enforcement, free education up until college, controlling the borders, emergency health care, and major infrastructure like roads and bridges, and that’s it. Collect enough only taxes to do those things, and only those things, and leave the rest of the money in the pockets of the working Belizeans who earned it.

We have to start in the schools and the time is now. Better teachers more books we can do it. Maybe we can reach out to Barbados for some assistance in some areas. If they is one Caribbean island to turn to it has to be Barbados. They are head and shoulders above the others and more political stable
