Career Fair held at Canaan High School

But over here on Coney Drive, high school students from Canaan have throughout this week taken time to consider their future career paths. A Career Fair was held on Thursday where the young minds heard presentations from numerous organizations providing them with valuable information on career options.   News Five’s Carla Bradley reports.

Choosing a career is important in every young person’s life. In high school, students have two years to choose what field to pursue whether it is majoring in business, science, or the arts. At Canaan High School, the students held its first Career Fair.

“Today is designated for career fair. We started on; this is career week. We started from Tuesday. Tuesday, we had the second formers and first formers select their career and dress in their uniform that depicts their career. Today is the fair and so we have invited around nineteen institutions to come to display the type of career found in Belize.”


With participation by a number of organizations and businesses such as Tropic Air, Coast Guard, K-9 Unit, Belize Police Department, Fire Department and many others, the students paid keen attention to their presentations and shared just what they hope to become in the future.

“When I get into third form, I would choose business; I would like to be in Business. My reasons are because I would like to be a business manager; working in business areas. I would choose the Police Department; the K9 Unit.”

“In the medical one. Yes science; because I like experimenting and I want to be a doctor when I grow up. Heart surgeon; because deh noh have lot dah Belize, especially female ones deh noh have.”


Desaranda, 2nd Form Student

“I want to be a doctor. I want to be able to help that is in need.”


Ryan Gentle, 2nd Form Student

“I want to become a pastor. Because I love god; I love my lord Jesus Christ.”


After a morning filled with songs and laughter, and a memorable presentation by the Apallo of the K-9 Unit, first and second form students were one step closer to choosing which field to venture into while the third and fourth form students got a glimpse into what can be their future professions.  Carla Bradley for News Five.


Over three hundred and fifty-six students are enrolled at Canaan High School and according to the principal; the most common field is in Science.
