Minister of Forest condemns beating of monkey to death

The investigation by the Forest Department into the beating of a black howler monkey and its subsequent death from injuries sustained has concluded. It is believed that charges will be levied against four third form students and a teacher who were involved in the incident. The fine for the offense is one thousand dollars each or six months in prison for what has been classified as illegal hunting of the howler monkey. A video shows that after the beating, the endangered species was tied up and further harassed.  Today Forestry Minister Lisel Alamilla told News Five that even more than just breaking the law, the attack on the monkey was appalling and inhumane.

Lisel Alamilla, Minister of Forestry

“As a country really, we really have to be concerned about acts that are inhumane. There is nothing wrong with hunting, but what transpired with the monkey in Orange Walk—as has been reported so far—is really not a good reflection on our society.  That wasn’t hunting. That was just incredible violence against an animal that poses no threat to society.”

The black howler monkey died on Friday at a rehabilitation facility managed by the Forest Department in Corozal.

Who is this teacher? I would like for the media houses to post at least one photo of this scum bag. It didn’t cross my mind that an educator would have this type of mentality. And it’s so sad that a lot of youths look up to teachers as their mentors but rotten ones will definitely lead them in the wrong direction. It’s teacher like this idiot that contributes to and creates this present Belizean society that is in turmoil. I wonder if anyone has already post the heart-breaking video on YouTube, Facebook, etc.

Their parents must be so proud…….Senseless cruelty from a child encouraged by an adult and a teacher at that wow Belize wake up I hope the punishment fits the crime and I don’t mean a fine that doesn’t get paid.

what kind of sick people do this. so glad they are pressing charges.

The 1000 dollars should just be the begining. The students should face more punishment from the school and obviously the teacher should be expelled from the school and the teaching licence should be revoked. Would you as a parent want that teacher…with the moral values shown…to teach your child????

I have a good idea for Hon. Alamilla: next time Gapi steals a load of rosewood, let these kids tie him up and beat him like a howler monkey.

This cruel crime shows real depravity on the part of the teacher and the students who did his bidding. The teacher needs to be fired and they all need harsh punishment to serve as an example to the rest of us.

What are we teaching our childre. These children have shown that they have the capability to kill. Many killers started as children who hurt animals, these kids need counseling. Their parents better not take this as an isolated incident, get those kids some help.

this is a huge embarrassment to Belizeans and truly disappointing for me to read the news from abroad and see this kind of inhumane actions.

these kids need to pay for this crime. They should be allotted plenty of community service hours to make them think about what they did and realize right from wrong.

They need counseling, they need guidance, a couple of whips wouldn’t hurt either.

Don’t let this crime go unpunished. Jail time, fines, counseling and community service need to be appointed!

Senseless idiots! Wild life is one reason tourist visit Belize and it’s a shame that a person who suppose to be a educator behave this way. It tells a lot about where he comes from and how he grew up. He is a total embarrassment to the education department and as far as I am concern, six months is not enought and he should never be walk into a classroom again!
