Former Belize City mayor makes donation to Maud Williams High

We haven’t heard much about former Mayor Zenaida Moya since she demitted office. But today we caught up with her at the Maud Williams High School, formally known as Saint Michael’s College, where she made a generous donation to the school’s Creative Arts and Vocational Department. Moya handed over some fourteen sewing machines and other sewing equipment to be put to good use by about twenty-five students to hone their sewing skills. News Five spoke with Moya and Head of the Sewing Unit at the School, Alice Williams about the donation.

“I believe in ask and it shall be given on to you. And when it comes to children, I am going to go the extra mile to make sure that they have the necessary tools and equipment to work with. Here at Maud Williams we cater for students who don’t have; those who are rejected from other high schools and sometimes it is very fortunate that we know people in the community who will be able to supply us with the things we need. So this is one of the reasons why I had called on my friend and asked her for donation of these sowing supplies. I didn’t know if she had; I don’t know if she could have gotten, but I still asked. I believe in asking for things especially when it comes to things like educating our student.”

“She has worked with me before when it comes to sewing training for women and she asked me for her students which I must say are males and females. As a matter of fact even the shirt that the model wore was sold by a male student. And the clothes that were showed, males and females sow them. So alike asked me for it and I ensured that I got as much as I could—fourteen of everything: sewing machines, chairs, sheers; everything. And it has a value a little over five thousand dollars. And whatever else, we already said that anything extra, we want to ensure that the public comes out tomorrow night for the fashion show.”

A fashion show will be held on the school compound at six p.m. on Friday; tickets are on sale for only five dollars. The items on the runway will be those made by the sewing class.

I wasn’t a fan of Moya when she was mayor, but I’m a fan of her as a philanthropist. Thanks for your generosity, help to these young people today can ensure that they are productive and contributing members of society tomorrow, who can lead happy lives with secure careers. After all, everybody needs clothes, so people who can sew will always have work.
