Special Olympic Athletes receive gear for Fun Run

On Thursday morning, hundreds of young athletes and supporters of the Special Olympics will take part in its annual Fun Run which is staged to bring awareness to the sporting event. For the past three years, Special Olympics has been collaborating with a U.S.-based organization, One World Running, which donates tennis shoes to the special needs kids. This morning, One World Running distributed tennis shoes, as well as T-shirts, to some one hundred and forty-eight athletes from the Stella Maris School. This year, however, apart from the run here in the City, Special Olympics and One World Running will be participating in a fun run in Corozal Town on Wednesday. News Five was at Stella Maris School today as the students and young athletes received their running gear.

“Special Olympics Belize has an annual fun run and we have that in every district. Some districts will have it a different date, but within that same week that the organization, One World Running, is here in Belize. And so we have every district running. In Belize City, we have the students from Stella Maris running along with the participation of the community. We have people from the police department, from the B.D.F., from different groups that participate in the fun run and we usually have like three hundred to five hundred people running on that day. But this year we are doing it in Corozal so that we can bring awareness to other district.”

“From that first pair of shoes that I gave away twenty-seven years ago, now we’ve done many. We always try to partner with people like Miss Elodia and Special Olympics because we want to make the most of our time and the biggest gain for our buck. We get a lot of request, you can imagine and so we were impressed with the professional attitude of Special Olympics and Allen was the head guy at the time and we just love working with the group and the whole attitude. You can see the kids here; it is so excited—I mean you saw that, it is fun. And students come down from United States and they are on Spring Break and the whole idea is to just to build community and to help form one world. Runners throughout the United States donate their shoes to us since we’ve been around so long. If you go to different stores and things like that, there’s bins—they get dropped off. And the beat up shoes that are not suitable gets recycled. So everything is used. And we only bring new or near new ones. And Anna who is our chief founder, she washes them all. And so they get distributed from all over the United States—mostly Colorado, but all over the United States—just runners and regular people who just want to build community.”

“T-shirts and tennis shoes for our fun run which will be held here in Belize City on Thursday. In Corozal, the group that came, One World Running, will be running with the kids in Corozal tomorrow, Wednesday at six o’clock at the Central Park. So they will be running two races—one for the small children and one for the high school and adults.”

The route of Thursday’s fun run is from Stella Maris and along- Princess Margaret Drive on to Newtown Barracks and then Freetown Road and ending at Stella Maris, that’s a total of one and a half miles. As we have in the past, our morning show OYE will be covering that event live.

Special Olympics is a great event for some of our most underprivileged kids, all these athletes are winners in my book.

Thank you once again to the generous Americans who donated shoes to our special athletes, and to all the good Belizeans who donate time, money, and effort to this good cause.
