Superbond successfully launched

The government has announced that the Super Bond has been successfully launched. As of today, holders of eight-six point one-seven percent of the country’s U.S. Dollar Bonds due in 2029 had tendered their bonds in response to Belize’s February fifteenth, 2013 offer to exchange those instruments for new Belize U.S. Dollar Bonds which will mature in 2038.  Under the new terms, holders of not less than seventy-five percent of the Bonds have instructed the Trustee for those instruments to tender the entirety of the 2029 Bonds in exchange for 2038 Bonds. The results of the tender process that ended today and the bond exchange should be completed by the end of the month.

    I pray we never have another GOB that puts us deeper into debt. As it is, an entire generation of Belizeans — everyone working for the next 25 years! — will be working to pay off this mountain of debt, for which the nation received so little benefit.

    It’s an immoral legacy to pass on to our children, and I hope it’s the last of its kind.

    Shaddap! It was the last PM not the current PM that formed the first bond to tie up “loose ends”. The only benefit was clean up a governments messy balance sheet and line their own pockets. If curent PM didnt address this robbery bond in any way no self respecting investor would have even considered Belize as an investment for the next 20 years.
