Galen University student apologizes for sports/nationalism foul up

While the softball team is writing some victories at the games in Costa Rica, another local athlete has also penned a statement regarding his performance at a recent basketball tournament in Guatemala. It was the same tournament that caused the Belize National Basketball Team to return to Belize prematurely from Peten, because the facility, the logo, and banners all showed the country as part of Guatemala. The organization itself was not sanctioned by FIBA, the governing body for basketball. However, there were three Belizeans who received invitations to play on the Peten, team.

Raul Roches

Galen University student Raul Roches went despite warnings from the Galen coach. So to keep his scholarship Roches wrote an apology letter today. In short it said, “Dear Galen Community and fellow Belizean Brothers and Sisters…Basketball is my passion and I think that my love for the sport caused me to make a premature decision which I am not proud of now; it has brought unnecessary negative criticisms to my school and my fellow Galen Eagles basketball teammates.  I am writing this letter as a public and heartfelt apology to my school, the nation of Belize, and most of all, my fellow Galen Eagles teammates and school mates.  I apologize if my actions offended any of you in any shape or form, especially during this international dispute our country is facing at the moment; I am truly sorry if my decision has brought any shame to my team and my school and I guarantee you all it is definitely a lesson learned on my part and it will not be repeated.”

  1. sickntired says:

Thank you young man. I hope you really understand that your apology means a lot to us especially right now when we have weak leaders and a forceful bully as our neighbour.

  2. dat just gud fu dem says:

as a University student you should be educated enough to understand patriotism……your punishment from the University should be to do some patriotic community service such as empowering youths throughout Belize to respect the Flag and the Anthem……….the letter alone is too easy to forget what you have done……….

  3. BT says:

Galen University should be ashamed for bullying this young man into a forced apology. People need to realize that he only played for a club team in a tournament. He did not play for the Guatemala National team against his own country. People are treating Roches as some sort of defector or accusing him of an act of treason. Let’s dial back the hysteria about all things Guatemala and look at this in it’s proper context. I am sure the president of Galen University has his own dealings with Guatemala in the course of his business as well. Belizeans from all walks of life do likewise. Last time I checked there was no “trading with the enemy” law regarding Guatemala.

it’s obvious there’s two guatemalan flags where is our Belizean flag, i can’t see it, so it meant that they invited our team to be part of their national team also.
I agree that his punishment is proper, need to learn some respect for yourself young man and be patriotic, we understand when we have international players but this is different case where we’re almost in war with guatemala, so don’t be like you thought it wouldn’t affect the nation with your self decision you made , over all I’m happy you apologize and hope it’s not written in history since your grandchildren might read your mishap in history some yrs later.

wise words.. “Galen University should be ashamed for bullying this young man into a forced apology. People need to realize that he only played for a club team in a tournament. He did not play for the Guatemala National team against his own country”

  6. Storm says:

Apology accepted. It takes a man to apologize, but it’s the right thing to do when you make a mistake.

His teammate Burgess is a different matter, though. He should be banished from Belize for his self-centered comments. What a jerk. He should leave Belize and move to Guatemala, and raise the intelligence of both countries.

  7. hmm says:

i don’t see any Belize flag with the picture that shows the participating countries. And Belize team was a part of this? I only see teh Guatmeala emblem with Belize as a part of it. They don’t recognize us. that organizaiton is messed up. BT you are clearly not a Belizean, you must be a foreigner. Then again Brent T, i am right.
