Less than two hours before that murder, there was another homicide. An argument between two men escalated in an exchange of gunfire in Hattieville. Another youth from the Belize District is at the K.H.M.H. morgue following a shooting, for the second time in a week, in Hattieville. Twenty-three year old Abel Arana was socializing at the house on Camal Street when he reportedly got into an argument with Sherlock Martinez. According to police, there was an exchange of gunfire between the two men. Both were injured and rushed to medical facilities, but Arana perished at the Hattieville Health Center.

“Sometime after nine p.m. we received a call with regards to somebody being injured and taken to the medic center in Hattieville. Subsequently, we learnt that another person was brought to the hospital in Belize City and was attended to and is being attending to as we speak. The one at the medic center succumbed to his injuries and we believe it is a gunshot wound. We understand that it is persons socializing that had an altercation, but we are still looking into exactly what transpired.  Our investigation at this time is still ongoing and we are looking into the possibility of it being between the persons that were injured.”

Arana was shot once to the abdomen and to the left side of his buttocks, while Martinez was hit to the lower abdomen.

Up until this morning, the crime scene was still cordoned off and investigators returned to process the scene even further. Two expended nine millimeter shells and two live rounds were recovered from the scene. Shortly after, Arana’s Father, Darrel Baptist, arrived on scene. According to Baptist, he was to take his son to the cayes to work with him.

So sad, sorry to hear that.
We should all beware of guns, our kids should not have guns. If I KNEW my kids have guns, I…ME …MYSELF will go take him AND THE GUN to the police.

“Socializing”does not mean consuming alcohol ,doing drugs and using violence.Irresponsible and unlawful behavior has to be referred to as such.Probably the term should be “getting drunk and stupid”.
