Basketball player survives shooting on BelChina

Ronald Rivers

There was another shooting incident in Belize City this morning. The victim has been identified as Ronald Rivers. Rivers went along with the delegation of Belizean basketball players in Peten, Guatemala last Thursday and returned on Friday. According to the Belize Basketball Federation, his place on the team was not permanent, but he did play very well in the game against Mexico.  Rivers was the passenger in a vehicle that experienced mechanical problems at the corner of Youth For the Future Drive and Vernon Street. Rivers was shot when he went back to the vehicle and according to his relative who spoke off-camera; fast police work is the only reason why Rivers is still alive.

“Yah. I say dah wah robbery cause I know he no ina no gang thing and the owner of the vehicle noh deh ina no gang thing. He is a public servant. So it would be hard for me to say dah any gang banging thing. I was by my relative’s house by BelChina Bridge where the shooting take place. So my family told me he heard a gunshot. So he run out pan the street cause I know the vehicle that my relative got shot in was my brother-in-law vehicle; wah public servant. So he come out pan the street and he tell me bwai yo family got shot. So I run to BelChina Bridge and when I look I see my relative on the ground. So same time the police mi come and we put him back of the pickup truck and we race come to hospital. But when I get the sense weh di happen now, it look like dah wah robbery happen because he was looking for something in his vehicle and then the guy came up and just shot him in the face. My relative here is a basketball player. The only reason he is in Belize is because of the Guatemala logo that Guatemala and Belie had that dispute. He was working out at the Princess Gym with the guys that came to play in the tournament; that’s the only reason. So the vehicle broke down dah BelChina Bridge and that was the spot he get shot. The vehicle broke down right dah BelChina Bridge and dah right deh soh dehn shot ahn.”

Jose Sanchez

“Okay what is his condition at this point? I know you have spoken to doctors in the facility.”

  1. Storm says:

Even if he survives, the shooter obviously intended to kill him, and he should be punished as a murderer. He can’t be rewarded with a light prison sentence simply because he is not a good shot.

We need a new government that will WIPE OUT the violent criminals, one strike and they’re out!

  2. Eye in the Sky says:

Several people have been murdered recently when they have had car breakdowns.

Do you think we might have several serial killers in Belize ?
