Sports Monday with James “Jah over all” Adderley

James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Week 4 of the PLB Season saw the People’s Stadium in O.W. host the monster clash between San Felipe Barcelona and Placencia Assassins as both teams sought to make advances in the standings. We’re just five minutes in when visitors get this look at goal and indeed Kareem Haylock should have done better with this chance. Barcelona responds with this nice penetration from Clifton West, but he ends up hitting the side nettings of the goal. Now here’s good work from Dellon Torres who comes up with the perfect feed to his brother, Zerrick Torres who squanders the golden opportunity. The visitors dodge a bullet when Clifton West deals to Derys Benavidez whose attempt at goal is foiled by a necessary intervention from goalkeeper, Elias Pelayo who come off his line.

At the 38th minute, Ashley Torres provides for kareem Haylock who makes amends for his earlier miscue to open the scoreboard with a vicious left foot swing. Meanwhile, this wonderful display of team work when Clifton West finds Harvey Cruz who somehow gets this ball to Derys Benavidez and he makes it a 1-1 tie at the 45th minute. We go to second half and Derys Benavidez is still pumped up by his goal when Harvey Cruz again finds him in front of goal and the left launch gives San Felipe the 2-1 lead. Just when Barcelona is in the ascending, Clifton West hurts his team by attracting this red card from the referee for an off the ball misbehavior because of this play which is definitely un-sportsmanship behavior by Elias Pelayo. Things get worse for the home team when Kareem Haylock launches this set piece from the corner spot and this slight touch by Harvey Canul beats his keeper with the dreaded auto goal and we’re tied at 2-apiece. Folks some days are worse than others indeed because we’re into extra-time—just a minute from both teams sharing the points when Alexander Peters out runs Randy Cassanova whom he might have foul, but it’s his left swing that comes with the game winner as Placencia Assassins post the 3-2 victory on the road.

In other results from around the league, Verdes FC doubled FC Belize 2-1, Police United and San Ignacio battled to a 1-1 draw and now there’s no undefeated team in the league because the B.D.F. bombed the defending champions, Belmopan Bandits 2-zip. Week 5’s schedule looks like this on Saturday. Verdes will host Police at the Marshalleck, while on Sunday; San Felipe travels to the Norman Broaster for a date with the B.D.F. Placencia Assassins will be at home against San Ignacio and FC Belize will be inside the MCC in a battle with the Belmopan Bandits.

In news from the O.W. Secondary Schools Challenge, New Hope High schooled Belize High School of Agriculture 5-2 and O.W. Technical High dropped Muffles College in a 4-1 finish.

Checking the Table Tennis Scene, here are the top rankings from yesterday’s RF&G Bi-Annual National Ranking Tournament. Zhi Chen beat Nicholas Martin for the # 1 ranking in the A Division. Tyrone Tun got over Nicholas Martin to be # 1 in the B Division. Sen Sen got past Daniel Sanchez to rule the C Division. While Petie Matus Usher is boss in the women’s ranking after rolling past Nikki Chen.

Turning to the cycling scene. Cross Country fever is still ablaze despite the confusion as to whom runs the sport in Belize. Cassa’s Saturday race which ran for 50 miles from Leslie’s Imports to the Boom Road/Phillip Goldson Highway Junction saw 33 riders suit at the starting line. Around mile 10, we find Greg Lovell of Telemedia and Mark Staine of Benny’s Megabytes leading the race. And are still in control when they hug the Hattieville roundabout; enjoying a 30 second lead over a compact pelathon that seems well organized. At the prison, Greg Lovell steps out to take the premie as Mark Staine can only look on. However, at the turn around point, it’s Brandon Cattouse in sole possession of the lead albeit not by much. On the way back, Mark Staine took the station prize at Mile 10. So we go to the finish. Brandon Cattouse of C-Ray pulls the trigger on the inside lane. Jairo Campos of Benny’s Megabytes mounts a challenge to his right that is immediately dismissed. Brandon Cattouse takes the ride in 1hr 58 minutes. Jairo Campos is 2nd while Nissan Arana of D&C Cycling rounds out the top 3. Meanwhile, the Weekend Warriors race ran through the hilly Hummingbird and here’s the sprint for the A class which ran from Belmopan to St. Margaret’s and back. Preston Martinez of BCB/FT Williams edges out Roy Hyde of Santino’s for the big win at a time of 2hrs 1 min 45 secs. In the B class which ran from Belmopan to Sibun Bridge, Dean Boyce of BCB/FT Williams edged out his teammate Daniel Cano for top honors while Isaiah Willacey of Digicell took 3rd. Chris Berry of B.N.E. took the C Class.
