150 wheelchairs; 3 donated to K.H.M.H. and its Auxiliary

One hundred and fifty wheelchairs are being donated to Belize. Earlier in the week, three were handed over to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and its Auxiliary. The donation was made by the Saskatchewan Canada Rotary Club through the local Rotary Club. The other wheelchairs were received a week ago and the club is wasting no time in delivering them to various medical facilities and individuals. Canadian Rotarian, Terry Stacey and her team of fifteen women were able to raise twenty-five thousand dollars for the initiative. According to Francis Woods, Past President of Belize Rotary Club, more than two thousand wheelchairs have been delivered across the country.

“We got in the wheelchairs about a week ago; we have them in storage. Our club has delivered over two thousand wheelchairs already. This will make about two thousand two hundred or something like that. Today we are doing deliveries to different entities that take care of children with cancer, Belize Cancer Society, World Pediatric Project. We are here at the Karl Heusner to deliver two to the hospital and one to the Hospital Auxiliary.”

“It was made possible through a lot of people in Alberta Canada in helping us raise funds about twenty-five thousand dollars so that we can purchase a hundred and ten wheelchairs and bring down to Belize and distribute the wheelchairs to those that need it the most. The initiative actually started with our rotary district as a whole coming down and doing an education project over five years ago in Belize. So when our club started to look at doing an international project, we decided we should do one in Belize because the district is already there. So we took wheelchairs and we thought that there was a need.”

“How did rotary chose the particular persons and of course the medical facilities to acquire these wheelchairs?”

Francis Woods

“That’s one of the beauties of being part of a large organization like the Rotary. We are here, they heard that we do wheelchair delivery, get them to folks that really need it and they have most of these clubs look at international clubs to partner with to do projects with. So they fundraise, get the wheelchairs, then we coordinate the logistics of getting out of the port, storage and the delivery. So we have the honor of delivery wheelchairs that these guys fundraise for and getting it to folks that really need it.”

Deliveries will be made directly to homes across the country for individuals who are unable to transport the wheelchairs. Woods asks potential recipients to call 604-2543 to coordinate the deliveries.
