Karate Kids fight across the border

The House of Shotokan on Princess Margaret drive, is only a stone’s throw or rather a karate chop across from this station. Our neighbors have been successful in different karate events in Quintana Roo. Shihan Ray Kelly says that on Saturday his ten students participated in the Eagle Park Taekwondo competition.

“The House of Shotokan was invited to Eagle Park Taekwondo Chetumal Championship. We took ten students to that event and the students brought home wins. It was more of a friendship, relationship-building competition where both Belize and Mexico and different schools throughout Mexico—Cancun and various areas of martial arts practitioners in Taekwondo—assembled there in Chetumal at this friendship taekwondo event. All the students were able to win their event. We had a total of about ten students that participated in different categories from children all the way up. We had some of our mixed martial arts guys that participated in that friendship championship also which all of them placed and were medallion winners.”

“I know you normally deal with Chetumal, the Quintana Roo area, but do you plan to visit other neighboring countries also to compete?”

Shihan Ray Kelly

“Yes. This year we have a full schedule of competition for the house of Shotokan students. Chetumal is the first one for the year 2013. We are looking to head down to Cancun towards March and we are looking towards outside of the Quintana Roo Area and heading to look over further into Mexico. We have about four different events scheduled outside the Quintana Roo area in Mexico. Plus we are heading into the United States this year—whether it be up in Virginia or possibly Texas—to compete at one of the larger championships in the United States.”

Kelly says that this year, House of Shotokan will accomplish its goal of participating at an international event in the U.S.

Karate is a great and practical art. Congratulations to our young competitors. From what I have seen, Ray Kelly does a great job with his Shotokan.
