Zero tolerance? Minister suspended and apologizes

By midday, the Minister of State with Responsibility for Gangs had been suspended from Cabinet for three months, without pay, for his involvement in the brawl with casino security and Corozal police. A cabinet release states that King was involved in behavior not consistent with his obligations as a Minister of State, and goes further to state that, “Cabinet has been informed that the police, in advance of their preliminary review of the facts, will be laying charges of disorderly conduct and threatening words on Honorable Mark King.”

And if that was not bad enough, the release goes on to say, “the Prime Minister, after speaking with Hon. Mark King had decided on an immediate three month suspension without pay from his duties as a Minister of State.”

There are, however, several things of immediate note.  Firstly, the Police Press Office release on the incident interestingly enough, though not surprising, was so sanitized that there is no mention of King, only Witz Junior, who was charged with assaulting a Police Officer. Secondly, when our news team spoke with the Officer Commanding the Corozal Police, Superintendent Andrew Ramirez, at about two this afternoon, he told us that he had not looked at surveillance footage of the incident and had not finished his preliminary investigation so it would not be fair to make any comment. Yet, two hours before we spoke to Ramirez, the Cabinet issued the press release which lists the charges to be brought against King.

And finally, there have been numerous reports of misconduct, bad behavior, criminal conduct and corruption against government officials. But this is the first time in our memory that judgment has been so swift and severe; meted out even before the Police have concluded their preliminary investigation.

Late this evening, Minister Mark King issued a very brief statement in which he admits that he was involved in an incident while socializing at the Princess Casino, but states – While I make no admission of wrong-doing and will take all necessary steps to be represented at the trial of those charges, I want you all to know that I am very sorry and deeply regret that this incident occurred.

In his release King also makes mention that charges have been imposed against him, but up to news time there has been no indication that King appeared in court and no official mention of any charges from the Corozal Police.

  4. Concerned Ladyville Resident says:

In this same light I also have concerns about the UPD area Representative of Ladyville, Mr. Michael Hutchinson. There has been much fuss in the community over the past couple days regarding his mentally challenged son, who he had kicked out of his home and rumors are that he threatened to kill his own flesh and blood. The young man in question, is also a problem child; he is a known theif and at times can be violent. Hutchi’s son had been relocated to an abandoned house on Swordfish Avenue in Vista Del Mar. If this man can do this to his own flesh and blood, then what is he capable of doing to other people. His child should be his responsibility, not a problem to the community. If he cant control the young man why not have him committed to a psychiatric facility. What would happen if this young man would rape one of the young girls who pass the area on their way to school every monrning?
