Pedestrians don’t walk into vehicular traffic

With the traffic congestion and inconvenience caused by the Belize City Council’s ongoing street rehabilitation project, any street or section of road completed and opened is cause for rejoicing. At the height of the Christmas season, the stretch of the Phillip Goldson Highway in front of the popular toy store A&R was closed to traffic and cemented. In January when that stretch opened, the other side of the highway was closed to traffic and cemented. They’re both open now and traffic is flowing but as usual, progress is bringing problems with it. The pedestrian walks are both gone, removed during the street repair. That would be good news for motorists, except pedestrians haven’t quite grasped the concept that no pedestrian walk means no pedestrians walking across the street. Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley says that while the Council isn’t looking at legally penalizing pedestrians just yet, they will have to start using the overpass.

“When we looked at the whole Freetown Road Project and the Northern Highway, it was clear to us that those pedestrian crosses caused an impediment in the morning. Anyone who drives that recognizes that. There is an overpass and what we mean to do is we’ve already removed the crosswalks and we are putting a barricade there so that people actually will be compelled to sue the overpass. When I’ve done inspections I’ve noticed increase traffic on the overpass. One of the things also that we’ve recognized in hearing feedback from our stakeholders and from the public is at night there is concerns of people being mugged on the overpass. So we are looking at issues of lighting; possibly removing the signs so that there is greater visibility as it relates to what is going on up there. But we’ve noticed that with the removal of those pedestrian crosses, traffic has flowed easier significantly more in the morning.”

The Mayor says that presently a barricade has been put in place to deter pedestrians from walking across the highway. If those barricades don’t work, the Mayor says they will then be forced to look at legislation allowing the Council to ticket pedestrians.

  1. Progress says:

so far I can see the vision, I think the cementing is turnin into a hussle, but on the pedestrian over pass, remove all the signs, provide proper lights at night, remove the permanent vendors that have taken up residence, BBQ,s and those infront of Stella Marris/Narcie. they are an eye sore and public spaces should be publlc. this is the entrance of the city, so make it beatiful again.
