Harmonyville to Minister: show me land titles

Nigel Petillo

Harmonyville, the grassroots community that initially began by Belmopan residents who wanted to cut out their piece of the Belizean dream, has been going at a steady pace. But one of the developers of the land at mile forty-one on the George Price Highway says that the process for many of the future residents of the area are being stalled at the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Belize Grassroots Youth Empowerment Association, (BGYEA) president Nigel Petillo says that his group is tired of waiting and they want the ministry to hand over the land documents for its members.

Nigel Petillo, Organizer, Harmonyville

“It’s frustrating to see how our leaders are behaving. If this is the behavior of our leaders and the individual who wants to be deputy prime minister of this country—you dah noh fi be deputy prime minister of the rich you know. You are going to be deputy prime minister of a country that has more poor people than anything. It is so disappointed to see that you have to be behind you, Mr. Gappy Vega, and your Commissioner of Lands for quite some time now for you to do a job you have been mandated by people; you are being paid to do this job, we are not begging you to do a favor for us. I have been back and forth to the lands department trying to get the papers for phase five and six at Harmonyville that we signed up for from last year in June or July. Can’t get those documents yet. I have been pushed around, I have been lied at; I have been disrespected by this man who wants you to respect him, the commissioner. I try to deal with ahn the best way possible mien, but I find out now and realize that it is a lot of push around. I di ask the Prime Minister once again; please talk to the DPM and ask him make he pass over wi papers mien. This dah all the grassroots people have to look forward to right now—owning a piece of document weh wah say they are somebody; they have wah resource weh could make their lives better. And yet you guys are playing games with these documents mien. Keep in mind, all the survey expenses weh we had to find on our own—just about five hundred thousand dollars, half a million dollars in expenses—we did that on our own. The roads weh we push, we did that on our own. Government noh give we wah cent yet; nothing out of a dollars. Nothing yet fi say these bunch a youths di try do something positive, we di try go agricultural and sustainable lifestyle. They don’t care. It looks they hate fi see that we di try get independent. I am so disappointed mien. I noh know how else to deal with this and what else to do. So it left me with no choice than to go about and tell Belizeans if yo obedience is not good enough for your government—because that dah one think we I realize that the Belizean people are so obedient that if yo say no, dah no. if you say yes, dah yes. If yo say wait, we wah wait. And we have been waiting, but how long you want wi wait.”

Petillo will take one more trip up the steps at the Ministry of Natural Resources in his attempt to get land titles for the new landowners.

Maybe one day it will dawn on these Shysters, that they can play a big role in curbing the frustration and violence so prevalent amongst ghetto youth. By then, I hope it won’t be too late.
