Senior citizen murdered in Maskall

Ervin Fitzroy Morales

There has not been a murder since the massacre of four gang affiliates in Belize City two weeks ago, but over the weekend, a senior citizen, who is an epileptic, was found dead in his house in Maskall off the Philip Goldson Highway.  Ervin Morales lived alone in a two bedroom house; his body was found on Saturday morning with fatal chop wounds on his head and elsewhere on his body. When he did not show up for lunch, a neighbor became concerned and sounded the alarm bell. Police believe his murder was motivated by robbery. Duane Moody reports.

Sixty year old Ervin Fitzroy Morales—he is the ninth murder victim for 2013. Morales died as a result of from chopped wounds to the back of the head, left shoulder hand and both elbows. A retiree, Morales lived alone in his home near the entrance to Maskall Village when sometime between ten a.m. and twelve-thirty on Saturday, his life was brutally taken. Elvis Johnson, whose mother cooks for Morales on a daily basis, says that his mother was concerned when he did not arrive for lunch.

Elvis Johnson, Friend of Deceased

Elvis Johnson

“Everyday Mister Morales goes to my mother’s house for food. He goes at least say eleven-thirty and when my mom watched her clock, she said it’s minutes to twelve, hmm I will give ahn more time. But when after twelve ih call sister Ferguson right down the road and ask ahn if ih noh see ahn. Ih she no.  He went and bought groceries for my mom around eight-thirty the morning and he left. After he left he went over the bridge to help some friends and then he come back.  And maybe it is after then.”

Duane Moody

“So you would say sometime between ten o’clock and when his body was discovered around twelve-thirty; that’s when this gruesome murder happened?”

Elvis Johnson

“That’s right.”

That’s when one of the neighbors went to check and inside the house on his bedroom floor, laid the lifeless body of Morales.

Elvis Johnson

“When Kareem gone in, Kareem found him ina di house dead with a big chop behind ih head.”

Monica Bodden, Channel 7

“You also had an opportunity to go and see for yourself. What did you notice?”

Elvis Johnson

“When I gone ina di house, I see ahn lay down face down with a chop behind ih head wrap up ina blanket. From I see the chop, I say somebody kill ahn. But I noh know why dehn kill ahn because Mister Morales dah noh know bad man. From I small and I know Mister Morales; that church right deh soh, Mister Morales ring that bell every Sunday morning, Sunday night; Wednesday night. Everybody know Ervin as a Christian man. Somebody come kill that poor innocent man.”

It is believed that Morales knew his killer or killers, who it appears, cleaned up after they committed the crime. Johnson says that he believes that the murder was motivated by robbery as Morales’s wallet is missing.

Elvis Johnson

“There was no blood stains which is so surprising. When I went in there, no blood was on the floor; the floor was clean. So the persons—because I noh believe dah one person do that—the persons who did it clean up the spot.”

Monica Bodden

“And they were pretty quick.”

Elvis Johnson

“And they were quick for real. And it was shocking to the village.”

Duane Moody

“Mister Morales was known to carry around money on his person, do you know whether that could have been the motive behind his death; his killing?”

Elvis Johnson

“Or maybe that could be it too—somebody weh know ahn and know ih got the money do it.”

Monica Bodden

“So you don’t believe that it was an outsider who came and did this murder in the village? You believe it is someone who is familiar with Mister Morales; right from the area?”

Elvis Johnson

“I’d ah kinda want believe soh because it has to be somebody weh know weh di goh on with him because all weh missing dah ih wallet.”

Duane Moody for News Five.

What a stupid, evil act. My prayers for the poor victim. Also for police to do a good job to discover who killed him, and that the DPP can win a conviction. Finally, for the people of Belize, I hope the murderer pays with his life.

As a people we have become worse than animals. We take a life with no thought about the person. This crime was commited by someone who knew this man carried money on him, they saw him go to the store and left with the groceries, and they may have even saw him pay for the stuff in the store. The police need to start with who was in and around the store at the time he was there. I pray they catch the killer and quick.
No one is safe, it is sad when you have to be afraid to let your neghbour know what is in your house or what you have. This country is hostage to the criminals andthe PM is the supporter and fertilizer that keeps it growing. He needs to revisit the laws and amend what needs to be ammended and bring bck the death penalty.

  3. Bear says:

@Al you’re right: BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY!
