Football highlights on Sports Monday

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The national football team of Belize has created much excitement and has increased expectations after 2 outings so far in the 2013 Copa Centroamericana. There is indeed a real chance that team Belize can advance to the 2nd round and that objective demands that we beat Nicaragua tomorrow, Tuesday, inside the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica. However, let’s got to Game I against the host team, Costa Rica, who came in with the advantage of having beaten Belize in 3 previous outing in which they scored 13 goals to 1.

Things certainly looked like it would remain the same when Jairo Arieta gets off this shot in the opening minute that fortunately bounces off the near upright. 7 minutes later, Belize tries to get some offense going when our most prolific international goal getter, Deon McCauley tries to find the far corner with this on the run left shot that could have surprised the goalkeeper who was out of his goal. Nevertheless, Costa Rica continue to dominate the ballgame and this set piece almost gives them the opening goal. Just before intermission, Oswaldo Rodriguez picks up this punch out by Woodrow West to fire a right away bomb that rises over the crossbar.

In the meantime, Woodrow West has emerged as one of the best goalkeeper at the tournament with plays like this one. Menisis tried to reach Savonillo but West makes the necessary intervention. For certain, the national team displayed a definite defensive posture, but at the 54th minute, Costa Rica caught the Belize defense napping and Jairo Arieta scored from pointblank range. Talk about a big time save; well Brenes fires this monster at our goal to see Woodrow West deny him a goal. Folks we applaud the defensive play of the belzie team but we will have to get some offensive going. We lost to Costa Rica. Their fans were upset about the minimality of the Win. For us, Woodrow West is man of the match.

So we go to Game II for Belize which came up yesterday afternoon against Guatemala, a team Belize drew with in a 3-3 UNCAF match n2001 and now we have become bitter rivals. As a result, an extended feeling out process ensued until Sergio Trujillo n leashes this cannon some 18 minutes in to display his wonderful talent. The Guatemalans continue to push the pace with Figueroa firing this shot from outside the box that isn’t too far off. At the 37th minute, Belize finally gets some offense going when Kafu Roches frees up Ashley Torres who certainly should have done better with this golden opportunity. A few minutes later, we find the Guatemalan Figueroa at it again and again his attempt to score is failed by Mister West.

In the meantime, it was wonderful to see our national grow in this ballgame and we present as evidence when this ball was delivered to Deon McCauley who forced Christian Alvarez to do his job. Elroy Smith then launches this cruel shot off the set piece and now team Guatemala knows they have a fight on their hands. So they respond in hand a Contreras sets up Figueroa who fires at goal but again Woodrow West shines. Belize finds itself on the back foot again when Contreras pushes this ball across the goal mouth—West passes the test. Here’s another crucial save from goalkeeper West when this shot is unleashed from atop the eighteenth. He sees it coming and makes a diving save.

At the other end, Andres Makin gets a chance to be the hero with this nice look at goal but he misses the target. In the closing minutes, Minor looks to steal the win for Guatemala only to see Woodrow West rise to the occasion. Belize holds Guatemala to a scoreless draw.

So folks Costa Rica beat Belize 1-0, Guatemala and Nicaragua tied 1-1, Belize and Guatemala drew nil-nil and Nicaragua was beaten 2-nil by Costa Rica. This round concludes tomorrow with Costa Rica facing Guatemala while Belize goes up against Nicaragua. A win by Belize will be our first win in 9 appearances; more importantly, it propels us into the next round of the 2013 Copa Centroamericana. The last time Belize faced Nicaragua, we battled to a 1-1 draw.

In other football news, we caught up with play in the OW 1st division tournament as Guinea Grass hosted Real Juvenil inside the People’s Stadium yesterday. We’re just 8 minutes in when Jose Westby catches up with this pass to score the 1st of a hat trick in this outing.  At the 43rd minute, Jose makes it 2 nil when he beats the defender to this ball and toes it in. Make it 3 goals in a row for Jose Westby when at the 64th minute he beats the keeper with a high header as Guinea Grass takes a 3-zip lead. 7 minutes later, Dario Westby gets in on the act to make it 4-nil with this header. And then Arnulfo Perez Junior makes it a 5-zip final score as he pushes this ball through the goalkeeper’s legs at the 81st minute. In other action yesterday, San Estevan blanked San Francisco 3-zip, Crystal FC clobbered New Hope 9-3 and Progresso bombed San Felipe 4-nil.

In cycling news, Darnell Barrow of Sanitno’s won yesterday’s Cassa Race beating out Byron Pope of bennys and teammate Greg Lovell who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the junior class, Brandon Morgan and Tariq Flowers—both of C-Ray—finished 1st and 2nd. In the weekend warriors race staged yesterday, Preston Martinez of M&M Engineering took the Sunday’s race. George Abraham finished 2nd and Barney Brown 3rd in the A class. Mark Reid of Zitro took the B class while Isaiah Willacey finished 2nd and Daniel Cano 3rd.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
