2 fires: Oar House Bar & Grill gutted in a case of arson

There are two fires to report tonight; one in the City and the other in Ladyville. In the case of the Oar Restaurant located in Vista del Mar, it is believed it is a case of arson. The restaurant went up in flames after midnight on Monday night and despite challenges, the Fire Department was able to extinguish the blaze but by then most of the structure as well as furniture were badly damaged. Duane Moody reports.

Fire gutted the Oar House Bar and Grill at the corner of Perez Road and Yellowtail Snapper Drive, in Vista Del Mar, Ladyville. Just before midnight on Monday, the security guard to the establishment was manning his post when the fire started. The fire started on the thatch roof and spread quickly; engulfing the roof and the patio. Firefighters responded shortly after and extinguished the fire.

Benisford Matura, Operations Officer, National Fire Service

“A quarter to twelve last night, we got a call from Oar House Bar and Grill. Our fire tender from Ladyville responded immediately; we had a few challenges in getting there because the road was not too good—a lot of potholes—so that slowed down our arrival time. But upon arrival we found a thatch roof of the building totally engulfed in flames. We got into operations; another tender from this headquarters went to Vista del Mar and gradually extinguished the fire.”

There was extreme damage to the thatch roof and the patio. Lost in the blaze were furniture, several appliances and other items valued at over twenty thousand dollars. Luckily no one was injured in the incident.  General Manager, Armando Garcia, says that they are trying to establish along with authorities, what could have started the fire.

“We lost some basic facilities which includes tables and chairs and other minor stuff but thankfully no one was actually at the building at that moment beside a security.”

“The establishment wasn’t opened yesterday?”

Armando Garcia

“No, the establishment has been closed for the past two days.”

The evidence so far has shown that the incident is a case of arson.

Benisford Matura

“The findings as incendiary meaning that someone intentionally lit it and from our investigation it revealed that it started from some part of the southwest corner of the thatch. And if you notice the thatch roof is a bit high. So it’s hard for some sort of ignition source to get it other than someone trying to set the place on fire. So that’s our conclusion.”

“I haven’t had the break to do an assessment at all, but our main focus is to get the establishment set up back again where we can open back for business as soon as possible and also to get to the point of what actually transpired.”

The proprietors expect to have the business fully functioning by Thursday morning. Meanwhile the investigation continues as Ladyville police follows up on what is believed to be arson. Duane Moody for News Five.
