Carnival Cruises by Belize without stopping

Tom Greenwood

According to the Belize Tourism Board, arrivals peaked last year with record numbers of visitors. But to start the year and in the height of the high season, one of the biggest cruise lines, Carnival Cruise line has cancelled ten stops in Belize for 2013, starting as early as this week.  That can have a huge negative effect on numerous sectors of the industry. The port, according to Carnival, has the capacity to accommodate four large ships, but five ships are scheduled to visit on the ten dates in question. The cruise line, in a letter to its customers, raises concerns that the tenders will not be able to “effectively handle the increased volume of guests without creating long delays and limiting your time ashore.” Locally, the tour operators stand to lose big bucks for tours that were already pre-booked. Tom Greenwood, the president of the Federation of Cruise Tourism Associations of Belize (FECTAB) the future of the two ships visiting Belize is unclear.

Tom Greenwood, President, FECTAB

“They cancelled Glory, which was a regular comer then it stopped for about a year and now it was scheduled to come again and now we’re told Glory is cancelled permanently so that’s one ship out of the picture. They cancelled Legend, which was to have visited today. Legend traditionally is a Thursday ship and that has been cancelled, we are told, indefinitely; we don’t know what exactly is going to happen. We don’t know that it was rescheduled to go to Costa Maya in Mexico in Yucatan and we saw a letter, written by Carnival to one of the guests, who had complained about wanting to come to Belize and saying that in fact, tendering issues and sort of laying the blame at the door of the Belize Tourism Board, which I can personally tell you is not true. They said tendering issues, involving tendering in Belize and that “we’re going to Costa Maya and we will an extra hour to your shore time; something that we have been hollering about for years; the short time provided by Carnival ships in Belize and now they’re going to give them an extra hour in Costa Maya. In good street gutter language, it sucks.”

“So what kind of an impact do you expect to have on our tourism industry?”

Tom Greenwood

“Well, once a ship is cancelled, many bookings that have taken place with the regular operators or what we call the independent operators, which are part and parcel of FECTAB, are let down. We lose a lot of passengers and therefore a lot of revenue, a lot of revenue does not go for Belizean families.”

Delahnie Bain

“So for these calls that were cancelled, there were already bookings for tours and so on?”

Tom Greenwood

“There were bookings for months on end. Some of the operators told me that they have bookings right down into May. It happens; people plan. I’ve seen bookings right into the end of 2013. So I know that people want to ensure that they are on the list of yes, we can do it when we come to Belize because Belize is a high demand destination.”

We lived without Carnival before-let them quit if they want. Others will come.

  2. Bear says:

There will be a big hit on our tourism economy until the gangs are finally crushed. The US has already advised its citizens not to visit Belize. For the cruise lines, I think the ongoing problem of tenders for the passengers and now a crisis in violence combined to cause this boycott of the Jewel.

There are plenty of equally nice places for them to visit, where the violence isn’t so obvious.

Tom Greenwood and his bunch are misguided. Tom is not the same man he used to be, he lives at the princess casino. An addict to that magnitude cannot function and be rational because he or she thinks only of machines and money . Tom is not fit to be the voice of any progressive group or business venture until he gets help.

  4. marie says:

Stop complaining, when Cruises tried to bring in tourists, you were choosey about what kind of people could visit, now with all the crime, not even Belizeans want to visit, THANK BARROW. FOR HANDLING THE GANG CRIMES

  5. Rod says:

Not anymore greenwood you need to thank this corrupt pm and gov. For their incompetence and the us ambassador has. Issued a warning to all Americans not to travel to Belize this will kill your lively hood so go to this pm and his gov. And thank them for their incompetence.

  6. Reuben says:

We got the same warnings here in AZ, I was suppose to visit with 2 of my friends and now they ended up changing their minds.
What I know is that this has to be fixed quickly because the rest of the world is watching.

  7. leonel says:

Well i feel so bad because Belize is a beutiful country. Unfortanetly leeders are messing up with politic. Is not only crime but law enforcement had beed a bused from USA CITIZENS puting in jail just for stupids things. We have better places to go without been treat bad. I saw one day i travel to Belize a place closer to BELMOPAN CITY by a bridge, i think name is roadlincreek, black people smoking weed on the street and polce is there because cops has one liitle room over there and they don’t said nothing,
And we saw in the news that one AMERICAN TEENAGER was putting in jail just for posetion, and he was a turist only. WUAAAUUU. justice for all. 3rd world country,

I think that the government of Belize should do what we would do here in the states. Employ a night curfew and any of those who are on the street as well as the trouble makers should be arrested. I think it’s sad that Belize as well as other countries has the means to make money on its own but when you look at it, foreigners own every aspect of Belize’s economic potential. When you have that, you take away not only from Belize but the people too. Belize really needs someone to get it back on track. Barrow can’t do it. And I don’t think he’s entirely to blame. Belize don’t have the means to combat the crime like we do here in the states. But in my opinion for Belize to do well economically, more Belizeans need to invest into the country and stop foreigners from buying Belize.

  9. Al says:

Obviously the PM and government prefers to cuddle the gangs than to build the economy. He prefers to provice for the good of the gangs instead of the welfare of the country and the law abidign citizens. People of Belize you are being abondoned and done in not only by the criminals, but also by teh very people you gave permission with your votes to look after your welfare. I hope you remember all this the next time you go to the pools and do not sell your votes for a few dollars again. Vote smart, start thinking for yourselves.

  10. Al says:

Reuben I am also in AZ and all my friends are calling me because we were going on a cruise later in the year. They are like Belize no way, so sad.

  11. Elgin tinez says:

  12. joe says:

  13. Lisa says:

It’s unfortunate that Carnival has decided not to stop in Belize. Whatever their reasoning, I think its best especially at this time. I am from Belize and I live in the US and it is so unfortuate that I don’t even want to visit Belize due to all the crimes that are happening. I am scared for myself and my family. Also, my boss is going on a cruise to Belize and I feel like I need to warn her about being in the city. Many people that I work with would love to visit Belize but I feel like they shouldn’t – not right now. Don’t know what will make a change in Belize. Maybe they need people other than Belizeans running the country.

  14. Ms Concerned says:

My family, most of whom were born and raised in Belize now live here in the US. I first visited Belize when I was 17 years old. I LOVED the place so much I visit every year since, faithfully.

Today I am 31 years old and shutter at the very thought of stepping foot on that island. It’s been 3 years since my last visit and I am not certain that I will ever go back… at least no time soon. My sons father was killed in September of 2011. Since that time, I have grown to despise the place.

Granted there is crime all over the world, the crime in Belize seems to escalate to a whole new level. I’ve been keeping myself informed about happenings around town and I can’t help but notice that there is such a lack of support for the people. The PM and his ministry I must say are WORTHLESS individuals.

Now I don’t know these folks personally but the dedication to this country and it’s people are non existing. From the time you can sit and meet with so called “gang leaders” and ask for violence to cease is a huge problem for me.

If you ask me, Belize is run by corrupt individual(s). The PM and his party do not run this country. The streets run this country. No head official there seems to have a grasp on it’s people, businesses, crimes, NOTHING!!!

Belize is in need of help. We need to bring folks on board that are willing to fight and make a change. There’s no future here. No one for the youths to look up to. We can sit, rant and rave all day but this is not helping either.

I wish I had all the answers but I don’t. All I can do is pray for the healing of Belize. Until there is a set plan in motion businesses will continue to fail, tourism will continue to cease, crime will increase with each passing day, little by little Belize will fade away. What a mess this is.

@Al and Rueben: Yes the world is watching which makes this whole situation 10 times worse. I myself know some people who made plans to visit but have since cancelled there trips and decided to visit elsewhere. I don’t want to speak down on the place my family and I call HOME but at this very moment, Belize is no home of mine. I don’t know this place anymore… :(

To anyone I may have offended with my personal comments, I apologize

  15. Indian woman says:

Marie… U r an idiot!!! That is why Belize is the way it is. People like you. I bet u borrow a pot to piss in.. And still happy and proud to be that way.Belize needs tourists.

  16. No Belize City 4 Me says:

First let me say that my family is from Belize and I go to Belize very often; sometimes 4-5 times a year for the last 32 years of my life and I DO NOT GO TO BELIZE CITY AT ALL!!! I live in NY and will never feel safe enough to go to Belize City EVER. As for the cruise ships they should have NEVER been going to Belize in the first place. When the world sees the beautiful parts of Belize in advertisements and then you take them to Belize City on a cruise what the hell did you think would happen? Do you think those people will really come back? I am so embarrassed when people that have been on a cruise tell me “I will never go back to Belize, I hated it!” and the first thing I ask is “You went there on a cruise ship?” and of course the answer is yes. They are expecting to see the natural beauty that the world advertises and then you take them to the ghetto where beggars are approaching them and harassing them for money. Shame on the Belize Tourist Board and all officials that were blinded by money and didn’t care about the image of Belize that they shared with potential return visitors. I have to repeatedly apologize to people and tell them to go another time and see the rest of the country. But to be honest I enjoy travelling to the rest of the world and Belize can’t compare or compete with what other countries have to offer. The price for a plane ticket to Belize can pay a plane ticket and 5 day vacation at a five star all inclusive resort. I hope the country takes this opportunity to straighten out the crime, make it affordable for franchise businesses to come in the country, revamp the poor hotel industry and review changes in the tourism sector…. and please please please renovate that damn airport. I’ve seen abandoned airports that are in better condition. And give the immigration officials some customer service training because they are the rudest …….. in the world.

  17. se george says:

Afte reading these commits I wouldn’t even think
    about visiting, we wanted to!!!

  18. i love belize says:

My family moved to Belize April 2013 from Cleveland, Ohio and are still enjoying every beautiful minute of it. The people are so sweet, weather is wonderful, food grows everywhere and is cheap. Of course we don’t live in Belize city. We haven’t had any problems here. There’s no other place I’d rather be. We’re raising 7 kids here with more on the way and I know other families doing the same. If poor people offend you than don’t come here b/c everyone’s poor. But people are people. I love people and they are perfectly happy with the way they live. I love Belize, I want all the rest of my kids born here.
